model, it is responsible for a good deal of the UK market share. Indeed, as it develops, the Terios seems

to become more and more relevant. The latest Terios is a case in point. The

range has been slimmed down and is now more attractive than ever. When it was first launched, the Terios was a slightly crude and simple thing, not too far removed from something like a Suzuki Jimny. The fitment of the 1.3-litre all-alloy

engine purloined from the Toyota Yaris range transformed the driving character istics and now Daihatsu has beefed up the Terios’ image with a pair of models that

MX-5, are two seater-only cars with very lit tle luggage space and hard ride set-ups. Best in other words, to buy one as a second or third car for when the sun comes out. Affordable hatchback-based Cabriolets (like, say, open- topped versions of the VW Golf or Renault Megane) in contrast, are a lot more practical but are often poorly built and dire to drive. Though they come with rear seats, these are usually too small for adults for all but the shortest journeys. Boot space also remains quite limited. Finally, because vehicles in this sector are

mind, you were probably thinking of some thing else. Sure enough, there are two other mainstream sectors in the drop-top category (Roadsters and Affordable hatchback-based Cabriolets) - but you need to know that both have their drawbacks. Roadsters like, say the MGF or Mazda’s

so easy to use everyday, most of them will have been constantly driven. This means you won’t have to worry about whether the car you’re considering might have been garaged for nine months of the year, with all the atten dant problems inherent in such a sedentary way of life.

Cheap and Cheerful Options Leaving aside a few very tatty early Celica

Cabriolets, the cheap and cheerful choice in this sector centres around MK1 Saab 900 and BMW 3 Series Convertibles and the Audi Cabriolet. Of these, the Audi is probably the most desirable, since it continued in produc tion until the end of the ’90s and therefore has a more modem feel. A newer-feeling alternative is the MK2

Saab 900 Convertible, which looks almost identical to the current 9-3 Convertible and has all of the same virtues. Saab introduced many significant handling improvements in the switch from 900 Series to 9-3, but few of them seemed to find their way into the Con vertible - or if they did, then they didn’t have much effect. The older-shape model then, makes a tempting buy. All Saab Convertibles have the considerable benefit of being able to seat four adults in real comfort. Aside from Volvo’s C70, no other rival can get close in terms of interior space.

nice, lowish mileage MK2 BMW 3 Series Convertible, or, as an alternative, a later Audi Cabriolet. If you want something with a newer feel, try a Toyota Celica Convertible or, better still, an Alfa Romeo Spider. The Ital ian car looks and sounds gorgeous, though for most buyers, there will only be the one 2.0- litre Twinspark engine choice.

Affordable Mid-Rangers At this level, you can start thinking about a

Desirable - But Potentially Pricey I t ’s all pretty nice at this level. Those in search of a true four-seater can choose between late, low mileage Convertible ver sions of Saab’s 9-3 and Volvo’s C70 or could look around for one of the first Mercedes CLK Cabriolets - or, if you want something really sporty, an drop-top Audi TT.

apply. Insist upon a full service history, try and buy from a dealer or a specialist and get an independent AA or RAC check carried out on the car in question and look out for botched accident repairs. Parts on prestige cars like these are astronomically expensive, so anything you find out is going to help you a great deal in the final price negotiation. Lit tle pieces of interior trim are unbelievably pricey to get fixed and, as for electric hood mechanisms, well, you don’t want to know.... Leaky hoods are an obvious issue, some

170 b.h.p 520i, the 231 b.h.p 530i and the 218 b.h.p 530d diesel. Both the petrol-powered units use BMW’s latest bi-VANOS valve actuation system that gives hefty torque low down and outright power at the top of the rev range. Even the entry-level 520i will sprint to 60m.p.h in 8.8 seconds, hit a top speed of 143m.p.h and yet return an average of 31.4 m.p.g. Step up to the six-speed 530i and the sprint drops to 6.7 sec

530d. Despite coming within a whisker of the 530i’s sprint to 60 - the diesel car stops the watch at an amazing 6.9 seconds - it will still go on to 152 m.p.h and return 41 m.p.g. It boats a torque figure of

500Nm (a Ferrari 360 Modena makes 372Nm) which means that it feels awesomely muscular when accelerating. As a contender for the world’s

best car the 530d takes some beat ing.

EL, the equipment list being exactly the same, but a full £985 has been shaved from the price, bringing a Terios with fea tures like power steering, twin airbags, electric front windows and mirrors, central locking and 15-in. alloy wheels under the psychologically significant £10,000 barrier for the first time. The Sport is a good deal more eye

but without the parking woes of a big 4x4. If Ford thought it was onto something new with the Fusion in this respect it was a good five years behind Daihatsu. The Tracker is basically a rebranded

catching wearing huge 17-in. alloy wheels fitted with 225/55 series tyres. The overall effect is to make this Terios

look like a remote control car scaled up, the lack of a huge whip aerial on the roof perhaps the only significant omission from

the standard equipment list! It’s enor mously appealing and boasts a competi tive specification list. As well as the big wheels, air conditioning and anti-lock brakes are standard as is a four-speaker CD stereo system, big Impreza-like front fog lamps that are set into a full width black underbumper panel and a rear wing that sits proud of the roof like a carrying handle. Colour choices extend to silver all over

or a choice of metallic black, green or blue with silver lower body cladding, the Japanese national obsession for two-tone cars worming its way into Daihatsu’s export stock. As an urban runaround that offers superb all-round visibility, cute good looks

and low running costs, the Terios has a lot going for it.
