another view, but the latest Shogun range aims to target buyers with aggressive value for money and a more attractive product. Hitting a moving target is a tough job. Mitsubishi is one of the cleverer importers


around. It does things quietly, without undue fanfare, but it gets results. Alongside Citroen, it foresaw that an adjustment had to come in UK car pricing and got its retaliation in first, netting many satisfied buyers and catching most of the opposition on the hop. The thing was, these price-slashing strategies were gen­ erally only applied to mainstream fare like the Carisma, the Colt and the Space Star. The big “high ticket” products like the largest luxury Shogun models were exempted, a policy which has now changed. Being Mitsubishi however, the company


knew that it had to do more to its off reading flagship than simply make it more affordable. Buyers have, after all, for some time been moving away from ‘tougher’ plush 4x4s like the Shogun into cars like the Lexus RX300, the Mercedes M class and the BMW X5. A change of model emphasis was required - which is just what we have been treated to in the latest version. Although the latest Shogun revisions are

No manufacturer can now hope to satisfy the bud- get-conscious, the family buyer and the luxu­ ry-led executive in one model range as this car did when it was originally introduced in first generation guise. These days, three very dif­ ferent approaches are required, hence Mit­ subishi’s provision of three very different 4x4 Shogun line-ups. While the Shogun Pinin appeals to the compact, affordable Land Rover Freelander-style market, the Shogun Sport aims to satisfy the family-sized Discov­ ery/Isuzu Trooper set. All of which at last leaves the real fully-sized Shogun range we fea­ ture here free to concentrate on the role its designers always intended for it: that of a rugged go-anywhere luxury express. Have.the changes transformed the Shogun


into- a soft-riding M-class or X5? The answer is no - which will come as a considerable relief to the loyal clientbase.
