Comedy ingredients of popular television
REUNION; Tuesday to Saturday; Charter Theatre, Preston
THE popular Hull Truck Theatre Company pushes the boundaries of comic reality in the latest play from talented artistic direc-
' tor John Godber. “Reunion” is pausing at
Preston’s Charter Theatre from Tuesday to Saturday next week during a six- month national tour. The play recreates the
world of “Reunion”, a gameshow sweeping the nation. The unexpected contestant is Jack Wesley, chosen from the audience to step hack in time to the college reunion to meet characters from his past. Jack does not know, but
his wife is hidden backstage with a makeover expert. The play slips into the
she and their daughter, Lucia, are left to starve while Ricardo spends all their savings on a sleek new car for his mistress. When he dies unexpectedly,
the family fortune - the flash car - remains with his mistress. Despite all his betrayals,
Lucia sides with her father and begins a quest of revenge, some thing which inevitably puts her on a collision course with her mother. Each week Festival Films will

fantastical and downright grotesque at times - much like the ingredients of mod ern day popular television.
Passion abounds in Spanish play
YERMA; Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester; to February 22nd
A SUCCESSFUL translation and adapta tion of Frederico Garcia Lorca’s “Yerma” makes for a stunning production a t the Royal Exchange. This passionate play in a Spanish vil
lage, centres on Yerma, obsessed by her desire for a child. Denise Black is powerful in the role and well supported. Director Helena Kaut Howson has con veyed the contrast of the arid landscape
with the fertility of water. The wonderful design by Simon Higlett with dramatic use of fire and water is augmented by music and movement by Akintoyo Akin- bode and Jack Murphy. The dramatic climax to the first act and
stunning ending are enthralling, while the costuming of the sisters-in-law who watch Yerma gives a modern relevance. Anni Domingo is effective as the pagan who offers Yerma a way out and the final
tragedy is stunning and unexpected. PIPPA MUNRO
Plays explore
battle of sexes EDUCATING RITA, OLEANNA; February 14th to March 29th; Dukes Theatre, Lancaster
NEXT week the Dukes Theatre, Lancaster, breaks with tradition by presenting two plays in the studio in repertoire. “Educating Rita” by Willy Rus
sell and “Oleanna” by David Mamet, can be enjoyed indepen dently in their own right, but by pre senting them in repertoire audiences will be able to watch both and appre ciate the fascinating comparisons. There is also the chance to see them in one evening! The plays will be performed from
February 14th to March 29th. Both plays are about a university
lecturer and a female pupil, hut that is where the similarities end. Written a decade apart and on
either side of the Atlantic, “Educat ing Rita” - made into a film starring Michael Caine - and “Oleanna” explore student/teacher relation ships. But, on a another level, they are about how men and women interact and how this is influenced by changes in society. Set in the early 1980s, “Educating
Rita” is a story about a Liverpool hairdresser's quest to understand lit erature so she can talk about things that matter. I t is about the clash of cultures between her tutor and her self. As the story develops, they learn
from one another. “Oleanna” is set in America on a
college campus in the early 1990s. Student Carol visits her tu to r to express concern about failing her course, but John's reaction is unex pected and leaves Carol confused. The position of power shifts from John to Carol in a violent verbal exchange. David Mamet's trade mark dialogue is highly distilled and this play is considered his most con troversial as the confrontation becomes an arena for male-female power struggle.
