THE brook begins to break its banks alongside the old weaving shed, above, - but things were to get much much worse (s)

IN the dramatic pho tograph on the right, the road is completely submerged as the brook becomes a tor rent and sweeps past the old Cobden Mill weaving shed and ofFiccs (s)

RESIDENTS were out in the streets as the cars struggled along Whalley Road. The village Post Office can be seen in the background, (s)

The day the rains came down

THE floods of the sum mer of 1964 are recalled here vividly in these pic tures of the main road

through Sabden. The scene is in Whalley Road, on July 18th, nearly 40

years ago, when Sabden Brook burst its banks. What is fascinating about

these scenes is that they show the old weaving shed and offices at Cobden Mill, which was later demolished when

the cotton industry went into decline and almost all the village’s industry was lost. For a village which relied

on weaving cotton, and whose main mill was named after cotton magnate Sir

Richard Cobden, it was a devastating blow. The water flooded Whalley

Road and even the back streets were affected with everyone outside keeping an eye on the rising water level.

Christian martyr, Valentinius, signed a letter to his loved one on the eve of his death in 1270, "from your Valentine." Ever since, it seems, we have been building on

our Valentine traditions. The first, ra th e r vulgar, cards made an

appearance towards the end of the 18th Century and, because of their nature, were sent anony

mously. Today, according to the Greeting Card Asso

ciation, an estimated one billion Valentine cards are sent each year, making St Valentine's Day the second largest card sending special day

ALENTINE'S DAY dates back to the Roman love festivals held in the month of February when, tradition tells us, birds

of the year. Those highly decorative Victorian and Edwar

dian Valentine cards many years ago are today highly collectable. I t was the Victorians who started the tradi

tion of giving tokens of affection, flowers, hand kerchiefs, gloves and the now familiar heart- shaped jewellery. And, we are told, money is no object when

love comes into play, for approximately 14% of UK diamond jewellery sales happen around Valentine's Day. Sentimental jewellery is said to be a strong

trend lor 2003. The threats of war and global terrorism have made us all more anxious.
