but the companies have been charged with recycling as much waste as possible from the general waste skips from our Household Waste Recycling Sites. "We have made excellent progress towards

increasing recycling rates and reducing the amount of waste we produce in recent years. This innovative approach can only improve matters. "Work is continuing to find more sustain

‘Booze brothers’ in national spotlight

DUBBED the "booze brothers", Andrew, Philip and Tim Byrne dominated a full page editorial on independent wine merchants in a national newspaper at the weekend. D. Byrne and Co, of Clitheroe, was

described by the Daily Telegraph as "a quirky business with a cellar of more than 3,500 wines." The award-winning wine merchants was

one of five featured, described as "five of the best," but, pictorially, dominated the page. Younger brother Tim explained how the

business does not have a list, but if the broth ers taste it and like it, they buy it. Adding that they only sell wines that "you

would want to drink to the bottom of the bot tle," the Byrnes offer mail order and delivery, but have no website or list. The coverage was an added bonus for the

family business, as well as again increasing interest in the many and varied independent retailers Clitheroe has to offer.

Change o f house style

at former hospital site PLANS to alter the type of houses being built at a former Rihble Valley hospital site have been submitted to the local authori ty.

Cumbrian-based company Merewood

Group Ltd has applied to substitute the house type on eight plots at the former Rihchester Hospital site in Preston Road to include the alteration of the roof pitch from 35 degrees to 40 degrees. The application (number 0056), which

refers to plot numbers one, 18,19,20,22,23, 24 and 25, has been submitted to Ribble Val ley Borough Council. In a separate proposal (0058) the firm has

also applied to substitute the house type on two other plots, numbers three and four, to alter the roof scape from 2.5 storey to a true three-storey height. Comments on both plans must be made by February 21st.

Hundreds sign up for new Hospice Lottery campaign

THERE have already been almost 1,0.00 inquiries regarding membership, of: the new East Lancashire Hospice Lottery. ‘ ’' ' ;" By the end of January, 998 people had reg istered interest in the weekly draw which car

and cares for patients from the Ribhle Valley, as well as Blackburn, Darwen and Hynd burn. The state-of-the-art facility costs £300,000

ries prizes of £1,500. The hospice reopened in January last year

a year to run and, in a bid to give fund-raising a major boost, the in-house lottery was launched last month, with the first draw to take place in April. Organiser Mr Harry Grayson aims to sign

up 2,400 people within the next three months and 7,000 by the end of the year. "Inquiries are coming in thick and fast and I am delighted and very encouraged by the returns," said Mr Grayson. "One of the major reasons for the fantastic response is the cov erage and exposure given by the Advertiser and Times. Reports on the launch, cut-off coupons and editorials have been, and are,

. paramount to tk e ,d i^ p p i^ t t{m<].(inariqihg success of the lottery.' This coupled1 with' the tremendous response from the people of the communities means we are well on our way to

' our targets." He added: "As with any success story, we

are somewhat victims of our own success arid we are working around the clock to create membership and introduction letters for everyone, so any one who has forwarded their application forms will receive their lottery details shortly." Mr Grayson said that several requests for

membership on a "collector" basis had been returned from the Ribhle Valley and anyone interested in spending approximately four hours a week working on a voluntary basis canvassing and collecting for the lottery would be welcomed. Full training would be given.
