Thumbs up for party

TRADITIONAL entertainment, as well as party games, were enjoyed by children in Clitheroe. Every year Castle Cement hosts a party for the

children of its employees. This year’s gathering was enjoyed by some 69 party-goers. As well as a Punch and Judy show there were

party games and dancing.. Pictured is party queen Laura Nerenberg,

whose father works in the quarry, and party king Paul McGrath, whose mum is temporarily cover

Nativity goes ahead minus sheep! 100 years ago

PRESENTS of chocolate, biscuits and sweets for the inmates were received a t the workhouse. The Dowager Lady Ribblesdale visited on Christmas Eve and gave each child sixpence, apples, oranges, Christmas stocking and a toy. □ The Pendle Forest Hunt held

a very successful ball in the Public Hall and as in bygone days when it was so popular an event, it estab lished a record in terms of atten

dance. The gathering was a representa

tive one, as the principal families of Ribblesdale were present. The room was tastefully adorned with the national colours and a r t muslins, relieved with sprigs of evergreens, and together with the beautiful dresses and the red coats of the huntsmen, the scene was a very brilliant one. □ At a local football match,

Chatbum defended well, but when Clitheroe took the lead after half time, the crowd became rather unruly and incited the players to bash one another. As a consequence of this the play became very excit ing. Darkness fell and the referee

stopped the game five minutes before full time, the score theii-, standing a t Clitherbe'3, Chatbum;

THE largest family party in the Valley was held in Whalley on New Year’s Eve. Mr and Mrs John Chew, who had celebrated their golden wedding earlier in the year, hosted over 80 people at the annual celebration, which had been held for as long as their 13 children, all of whom were present, could remember. □ Thousands of people joined

hands to pay tribute to the old year and to celebrate the birth of Coro nation year as church bells rang throughout the Valley. At King Lane Hall about 800 people attended the Clitheroe Co-opera tive Society’s New Year’s Eve ball. □ At Sun Street Mill only 24

looms out of 440 were idle and th e re was no absenteeism a t Jubilee Mill, Pendle Mill and Holmes Mill when staff started work promptly on New Year’s Day. Improved trade prospects for 1953 meant they wanted all the work that could be obtained, after hav ing a “rough packet” during 1952.

THE blacklisting of Clitheroe’s firemen by the secretary of the joint shop-stewards committee at Ribble Cement provoked a hail of criticism. He responded by saying: “The Fire Brigades’ Union made a democratic decision to go on strike and it is the strike-breakers who are being undemocratic.”

■ One letter, though, which sug g es ted he got down off his high • horse, was from the TGWU shop .■ stewards - at Ribble Cement. . □ Heads of local industries fore

cast a boost in production, new

• products for the export market and the likelihood of extra jobs. Man agers from Atkinsons, Trutex, Cas tle Castings, Bowker Brothers, Ribblesdale Cement and Neotech- nic all predicted a surge in trade. □ Spring term adult education

sessions started in the Ribble Val ley. On offer were mountain leader ship, solar heating engineering, fly fishing and gun-dog training.
