first a small price hike of around £1,000 to £32,680. In return for that, a power hike - from 218 b.h.p. to 245 b.h.p., which means that maximum torque has risen from 310 to 350 Nm/rpm. That in turn means that the 0-60 m.p.h. time has fallen from nine seconds to 8.7 seconds, while the maximum speed has risen usefully from 120 m.p.h.

Here is one of the world’s great engines, one of the few power plants that are as good to listen to and look at as they are to prod into life ivith a long stab at


the throttle pedal. The 147 GTA pulls like a train, thanks to all


that lazy torque, allowing the driver to leave it in third gear for most of the time. Should you really wish to press on, the ultra-precise six-speed gearbox will not disappoint. The steering is also a thing to be admired, the instant response being quite remarkable for a car with that much weight in the nose. The brakes are similarly beyond reproach. The interior is what you would expect of a

Elsewhere in the relentlessly well-finished cabin are some determinedly high-tech touch­ es. Six airbags come as standard, as doK dual­ zone climate controlled air conditioning. State-of-the-art multiplex wiring hM made possible the option of a full-screen voice acti­ vated satellite navigation system with an inbuilt Bose stereo and GSM telephone sys­ tem. It is not cheap, but the satellite naviga­ tion setup is one of the best available any where, as is the Vehicle Dynarhic Control. It is on a par with the PSM program used

tlety. The exterior is a little more low key than all


that power would suggest. Even the base 1.6- litre 147 is a fine looking car, so the GTA is off to a good start. The wheelarches are slightly flared and the deeper front spoiler is a key giveaway. True hardcore enthusiasts may sniff that the 17 in. wheels leave a little too much rear wheel arch in display but it is a moot point. The 147 GTA creates a powerful visual impression. If looks count as much as perfor­ mance, here is what to buy.
