CAKES that could save lives went on sale at Sabden

Primary School. Pupils, parents and villagers went to work with then-

ovens and baked a collection of delights to raise funds for the Heart of Lancashire Appeal, which is raising

funds to set up a First Responder system in the village. The stall raised in the region of £100. In our picture pupils prove eager customers for stall

holders from the Parent, Teacher and Friends’ Associa tion. (C131202/3)

Ramblers on their festive foray

ON a sunny Tuesday, 17 Clitheroe Ramblers set,off from Feniscowles Library and walked along the canal path to Cherry Tree. v • A path led bn to the road through

Pleasington fields, characterised by its numerous football pitches. After crossing Butlers Bridge, the ram blers followed a sandy path, with the imposing 19th Century Pleas ington Priory Church coming into

| view. From there, they went over Throstle Nest Brow and alongside the golf course.

Crossing the River Darwen, they

wended their way past Hunters Hill to Tallentine Farm and then to Hoghton Village. Lunch was taken in the graveyard

of the Methodist Chapel. Following paths tha t surround Hoghton Tower, there were good views of the Bleasdale Fells and the Fylde Plain. The route then led past the parish church and to Moss Farm. The next stretch was characterised by by a number of new stiles that had been fixed and very favourable comments

Jim’s visit was super, great, and smashing!

THERE was a surprise in store for Clitheroe charity worker

and neighbours received invita tions to an "at home and open house" and, instead of presents, Mrs Bailey requested donations amounting to £500 which is to be divided between the Clitheroe group of Friends of Chernobyl and St Paul's Church, Low

Sad loss of farming "expert who always had a story to tell

AN expert farmer who always had an interesting or amusing story to tell, Mr Jack Life has

died aged 71. He was born in Falls Church,

Virginia, America and came to Bolton-by-Bowland at the age of six when his mother returned to

this country to nurse her mother. Mr Life was seen as an oddity at

the local school because of his American accent, basebalj cap and long trousers. But he quickly got used to life on his uncle’s farm in the village and took it over nearly 50

years ago. Quickly able to identify each

sheep from boyhood, Mr Life was in later times highly regarded as a calving cow expert and producer of pedigree large white hoars which were sold all over the country. He also won at many shows with

cows and pigs. Mr Life always had a laugh and a

joke with friends at auction marts and was never short of a story to tell. But he also had a serious inter est in local and farming history, col lecting old dairy equipment. Steel milk churns were a special

interest for Mr Life. They were very heavy to lift and were later replaced by aluminium. Mr Life would colourfully paint

the chums to preserve them and the display he put on outside his farm was once featured by the Advertiser

and Times. Each addition to his collection

Warnings about flooding

WARNINGS tha t flood awareness is more impor tant than ever have come from the Environment Agency following a Christ mas deluge. With the region's ground

and rivers now saturated and with forecasts of more unsettled weather to come, the agency is urging people to be prepared for flooding.

Only about half the peo

ple at risk from flooding are using the Environment Agency's free automatic early warning system in areas where it is available. The free warning service,

called Automatic Voice Messaging, works by send ing telephone messages to warn householders and businesses when flooding is imminent. Triggered by the

agency's flood control cen tre, the recorded messages warn of the type of flood ing to expect and what action people can take to reduce its effects. To sign up for the Auto

matic Voice Messaging ser vice, or to gain advice on how to prepare for floods, contact the agency's flood line on 0845 9881188. You can also log on to
