Business executives’ initiative gains school a new computer

IT WAS a lucky day for Gisbum Primary School when a group of business executives chose the Stirk House Hotel, Gisbum, for their conference. The school received a surprise Christ mas present, thanks to a Business Link

team challenge. At the conference, one team was faced

with the challenge of doing something for the local community. Its idea to source a personal computer and donate it to the local school was planned, executed and delivered in under two hours! The headteacher, Mrs Jackie Harg

reaves, was delighted. "This will be a splen did addition to our ICT suite. Every pupil in the school uses the computers for many aspects of the curriculum", she said. To complete the package, NCS Support Services at Rawtenstall generously donat

ed a printer as part of their charitable com

munity programme. Phil Burgess, chief executive of Business

Link for East Lancashire, said: "Our over all aim is to support wealth creation in East Lancashire. I am very proud of how this team has used its initiative to such

good effect." Anyone who would like Business Link to

help them or their business should contact the business advisers on 01254 607000. Our picture shows (from left) Pam Ash

worth, deputy head at Gisburn Primary School, Graeme Edwardson, Hayley Hud- dart and Di Brooksbank from Business Link with headteacher Jackie Hargreaves, and pupils Annabelle Robinson, Frederick Wratball, Joanne’Oldfield, Richard Hart ley, Amy Fort, Kathryn Duckworth and Daniel Palmer, (s)

Excellent Roefield wins a prestigious leisure award

by Robbie Robinson

AN award for the quality of its services has been presented to Roefield Leisure Centre at a prestigious sport and leisure

industry event. The centre won the public sector

section of the Club Awards for Excellence 2002, which means Roefield was competing with much larger establishments, many of which receive local authority funding. Over 150 clubs from the UK entered, with 10 being short listed to make the final presenta

tion. Members of staff from the centre

gathered at the Leisure Finance 12th annual conference in Sheffield for the awards ceremony, which fol lowed a day of talks from guest speakers in the leisure industry. The judging process took the form

of a mystery “shopper” visit, the submission of a business portfolio and a presentation by staff to a

judging panel Roefield’s mission objectives and . . . . «

its plans for the future were the cri teria presented to the judges and proved a winning combination. The award was presented by Star Trac representative Mr Sean Thornton and Leisure Finance managing director Mrs Lynn Young. Roefield’s manager Mr Tony

Rodia said: “On the night it’s like the Oscars - you don’t know who’s going to win. It is a just reward for the vast contribution the staff have made and the loyalty of our cus tomers.” The win coincides with the cen

tre’s 10th year of business, during which it has grown from a small sports hall offering badminton and short tennis to a thriving sports cen tre for the whole of the Ribble Val

ley. It now has a fitness suite with 41

pieces of equipment in a Grade II listed building, a sports studio, rock- climbing wall and full-sized gymna sium which is used regularly for a variety of sports from football and volleyball to badminton and“serious

circuits”.

The fitness suite alone attracted m i

300 new customers last year, which means a total of over 2,000 working out on a regular basis. The centre is still seeking to

attract funding from groups such as the Lottery and Sport England, and despite a failed lottery bid in 1998, expansion plans continue. These include extending the indoor climb ing wall, installing competition bas ketball, creating a new, smaller multi-purpose hall and having a dedicated dance/aerobics studio, soft play area, meeting and function^ room, and a creche.

^ Mr Rodia said: “The futur^ of

Roefield is to maintain its high qual ity facilities and service in order to continue to provide the Ribble Val ley Community with sports and recreation opportunities.” Our picture shows, from the left,

Mr Thornton, gym manager Mr John Lever, receptionist Miss Deb bie Croft, manager’s PA Miss Alison Hargreaves, Leisure Assistant Mr Mark Arthur, Mrs Young, Mr Rodia and gym instructor Mr Andrew Ainsworth, (s)
