The basics of course, are much the same Replacing the Duratorq TDdi unit, this


engine on paper looks very little different. After all, its performance figures (0-60 m.p.h. in 10.8 seconds on the way to 122 m.p.h.) and fuel consumption statistics (expect a combined figure of 49.5 m.p.g.) are much the same. But the figures lie. The first hint of this


comes with lower emissions but a more important indicator is the mid-range over­ taking ability that TDCi Ford engines


as with any of the latest Mondeos. Which means that there are three body styles - saloon, five-door and estate - spread over five familiar trim levels (LX, Zetec, Zetec- S, Ghia and Ghia X) at prices ranging between £15,645 and £20,945 in TDCi 115 guise. The TDCi 130 b.h.p. variants are offered at a £500 premium at prices starting from £16,145. That these are the best diesels Ford has ever produced goes without saying - and is not that much of a recommendation. Still, for the Mondeo, these TDCi engines represent a good start on the road back to a place among the market leaders in the diesel sector.
