Indeed, trying to find a significant caveat in the FSI engine’s impressive showing is a tough task and one that brooks a realisation that the future has landed right before your eyes. Suddenly the old method of fuel being injected into an intake manifold appears almost gratuitously profligate. Although it was kapt quiet at the time, the 2001 Le Mans winning Audi R8 utilised such technology - the first time a gasoline direct injection car had claimed victory at La Sarthe.

SoTow does FSI work? A high-pressure fuel line mounted on the side of the cylinder head, often dubbed, ’common rail', injects fuel straight into the combustion chamber. The shape of the pistons and the clever working of a set of valves make the air ’tumble’, thus creating more efficient combustion. So tar so gooa, but don't a number of other manufacturers have the same set up? No. Where FSI engines really impress is their behaviour under part throttle loads. Whereas before, part throttle meant just-that strannulating the output by closing a butterfly valve the FSI system can be run with the throttles in a more efficient open position. How? In effect by creating a rich fuel mix directly next to the spark plug arm a leaner mix in other parts of the combustion chamber. This is not only more efficient in terms of how mucn fuel enters the chamber in the first place but it also means that less energy is wasted as heat to the cylinder block. In effect a blanket of air shields the ignited fuel from the walls of the cylinder. _.

Part throttle is all well and good in day to day driving, but how doBS this benefit a Le Mans car? When the throttle is pressed wide open, the engine reverts top a more conventional homogenous method or titling the combustion chamber with fuel and air. The 'tumble' effect and the synchronisation of air and fuel along with the careful metering of the high-pressure injection system all combine to offer more powermnd a cleaner engine. When you're dawdling you get great economy and when you want to drop the hammer you've got more power. Everyone's a winner.

Two A4 2.0 FSI models are available priced at £19,565 in saloon guise or £20,695 as an Avent This positions it nicely between the entry-level 130bhp 2.0-litre and the 1.8T models which, along with the 2.5TDI engine, has had its power boosted to 163bhp via some judicious tweaking of the engine management software. With !50bhp and a solid 200Nm of torque, the saloon version of the A4 FSI can sprint to 60mph in 9.4 seconds and on to a top speed of 135mph yet will average almost 40mpg on thecombined cycle.ltevon manages to achieve an impressively low C02 output of just 170g/km. To put this into perspectivo, the standard 2.0-litre modal is rated at 190g/km and the 1.8T emits 202g/km.

So we know the A4 FSI is a good citizen, but it also has another side to its character. Beneath ho sobor suit is a car that's good fun to drive. The suspension feels firmer than you d expect and the steer ng is weighty. True, thBre's not the delicacy of a BMW 3 Series, but the,A4 enjoys being threaded through a series of bends, the 150bhp engine more than capable of.entertaining despite the AudisJiefty all up weight Part of this is offset by a light alloy suspension system which is 8.5kg lighter at toa ,r°nt than the old-shape model's set-up. At the rear, there's a self-tracking trapezoidal-link system based on that previously reserved for quattro models. As a result, most feel the A4 to be more composed, controlled and agile than, for example, a VW Passat In case it ever isnt, its also worth remembering that ESP the Electronic Stability Programme) is standard on all A4s (but extra on the base Passat) to get you out of trouble should you overcook i t The system now also includes Brake Assist, for maximum retardation n

complement a stiffer chassis and revised steering. .


The latest A4 has grown in size to help passenger space. The length has increased by 2.5 inches, and although the wheelbase has improved by only half this amount, some clever repackaging of bodV^ell


has liberated not only extra rear legroom, but also additional head, shoulder and elbow room front_ond rear. Boot space is improved over the old car, hut then it had to be: this was not a strongpomt °f the original version if luggage capacity is whatyou need, the Avant estate offers 1,288 litres with tho seats folded. The ilfterXr"corresponds to what we've* come to expect of Audi - beautifully damped fitments, p e c c a b le materials quality and an almost frightening logic to all of the major controls. As with many modern cars the fitment of windscreen-pillar airbags makes all-round visibility less than optimal,'the chunky pdlars restricting views around sweeping bends. Should you fail to spot an oncoming tree however, fte latest generation of electronic sensors fitted to the A4 can detect how hard your impact is and tailor the deployment of the airbags accordingly.
