Controversy looms on housing front
BUILDING houses in th e Ribble Valley is going to get harder, as re p o r te d la s t week — and more controversial. The Government, local
councils, developers and people living near new- build sites all have differ ent viewpoints. As was shown last week in the Ribble Valley, colli
im
sions between the various factions are getting more
violent., Three-storey blocks of
rear garden. On the first floor there
are two bedrooms, en-suite shower room and three- piece bathroom. Outside is an enclosed
rear garden laid to an attractive patio with grav el beds and paving. There is open garaging for one car plus additional parking space.

houses, with a garage incor porated on the ground floor, are becoming more popular, but not with the borough's planning councillors. A plan incorporating some
atLittlemoor, Clitheroe, was passed by only one vote, as reported last week, after which one for the Pimlico bus garage was comprehen sively rejected.
PwnPEBTff N EW g by Tim Procler
Officials recommended
both projects, but houses 30 feet high were attacked by one councillor as likely to look like a cliff edge, espe cially at Littlemoor. Protesting residents at Pimlico complained that
there was no call for ugly three-storey homes - in the form of apartment blocks - and that they would not be in keeping with the area. Officials suggested in their report that this was not so, as there are three-storey properties nearby in Waddington Road. The officials also said: "It
must be remembered that the site, at present, is domi nated by a large, high and unattractive bus garage
______
building and thus the devel- opment, being well designed, with a high level of detail, with a variety of height of buildings, will hugely improve the visual appearance of the area over
the existing." It now seems a strong
possibility that the appli- ' cants will appeal, although it is too early for any deci sion on this yet. They may just try to adjust the
heights. As last week's Oakhill
College decision- showed, appeals where officials have recommended a plan often succeed, though the officials seem too professional to keep reminding councillors
of this! 1 m
