long as it did for somebody to launch the Audi Quattro or the Mazda M X - 5 or even the M IN I . Therefore, it seems sound logic to
break the mould in the executive car class. Ladies and gentlemen, the Renault Vel Satis V6, the car that is not trying to be a B M W 5 Series. Facing down the 5 Series has been, is, and will continue to be a tough
call. After driving across Europe in one
recently, my revelation that the
clutch footrest was a funny shape won’t exactly have filled rivals with enormous hope. The Vel Satis coun ters this by ensuring that everything is a funny (as in funny peculiar)
shape. The bodywork smacks more of
M P V than V IP transportation with a
curiously distended bottom. Like wise, everybody knows that in this sector five doors do not sell, wood does not work on French cars and only top-notch sporty handling will excite the frustrated racing drivers working for car magazines.

rail JTD models offer 85 b.h.p. and far superior levels of torque, although they do cost from £9,749. One of the things that impresses you
■ most about the JTD is its mid-range urge. It seems even more potent than that of the flagship H G T hot hatchback and is cer tainly more willing than the ‘warm hatch-
. back’ Sporting version. Yet you can enjoy all this with reasonable frugality. You should be able to achieve even better fuel consumption figures than with the 1.9D (a 58 m.p.g. average is quite feasible), yet at the same time, be able to accelerate from rest to 60 in 12.2 seconds on the way to 106 m.p.h. should the situation demand it. ' The Punto 1.9D Active has been proper ly priced to represent a proper bargain.
