THE village fete a t Hurst Green, usually held in August, was brought forward in celebra tion of the Queen's Golden Jubilee and featured all the usual attractions and sideshows, with races, competitions and afternoon teas. Locals and visitors followed a colourful jubilee float through
the village to the Bailey Field, at which point the drizzle turned to downpour and everyone ran inside.

down Widdale to Hawes. The higher fell tops remained capped in dark
cloud. After lunch, the wet
and eroded path down Arten GiU was descended to Stone House Bridge on the River Dee. Alongside the river, a
mile or so of quiet road was a welcome change from the boggy condi tions on the fell. There were many beautiful falls and rapids to be seen in the Dee, which was a rushing brown torrent after all the recent rain. At Dent Head, the
group left the tarmac for the track over Blea Moor. A rest for refreshment
was taken in the shelter of an air-shaft from Blea Moor tunnel. Then fol lowed the long down-hill gradient all the way to Ribblehead Viaduct, with the song of many sky larks and views of Whemside and Inglebor- ough, now free of their cloud cover. Sunshine replaced the
dark clouds as the ram blers crossed the area of caves and potholes below Runscar Hill and back to the start of the route. If you are interested in

dressed house was won by Theresa and Bill Crotty and Lucy Wilkinson. Bill and Jean Me Gahey were in second place. Teas were enjoyed in the hall to the accompaniment of Baxen- den Concert Band. In the evening, 250 people

MORE than 400 people cele brated the golden jubilee in Bolton-by-Bowland. The day began with the chil
dren's sports and, despite the weather, the children paraded in
fancy dress through the village. There was an array of kings,
parents, children and villagers played rounders and football at the cricket ground. The hog roast was devoured and ceilidh dancing took place. A beacon was lit as part of the national beacon lighting to commemorate the event across the country. Finally, an amazing fireworks dis
queens and even corgis as the chil dren were presented with commemo rative coins by Mrs Bosonnet.- When the sun finally came out,
