THIS week is Child Safety Week - an annual initiative of Child Acci­ dent Prevention Trust which aims to increase the awareness and under­ standing of children's accidents and their prevention. Accidents are the biggest killer of


children and young people in the UK and cause thousands of serious injuries to them every year. These deaths and injuries can be reduced through advo­ cating change in legislation, improving product design, creating child-friendly environments and through better knowledge of how children's accidents are caused. Child Safety Week assists practi­


tioners by providing them with resources to promote injury prevention messages. Each year a different approach or


theme is chosen. The theme is designed to encourage active partici­ pation and to promote child safety in an interesting way. The theme this year is that acci­


dents do not have to happen. Preven­ tion is better than cure.
