UNDER the authoritari an rule of charismatic bal let impresario Boris Ler montov; his proteges realise the full promise of their talents, but at a price; utter devotion to their art and complete loyalty to Ler montov. Under his near-obsessive

guidance, young ballerina Victoria Page is poised for superstardom, but earns Lermontov's scorn when she falls in love with Julian Craster, composer of "The Red Shoes"; the ballet Ler montov is staging to show case her talents. Vicky leaves the compa

the film of The Red Shoes is this week’s competition prize. The film was made more than 50 years ago and is a wonderful adapta tion of Hans Christian Anderson's fairy tala It is a real treat for fans of romance, music arid melo drama. The first correct answer

Double bill of opera

RAVEL and Stravinsky feature in an unusual double bill for two nights at the Lyric Theatre, Salford Quays,

tonight and tomorrow. The evening brings in Opera North

yrith Ravel's darkly-brilliant dance- opera "L'enfant et les sortileges" fol lowed by "Petruska", Stravinsky's explosive ballet which often makes for a spectacular orchestral showpiece, hut which is rarely danced. Stravinsky wrote Petrushka for

Diaghilev and the Ballet Russes in Paris. The original ballet is based on the well-known tale of a puppet who is magically invested with life by his owner, and given human feelings and emotions. This new staging reignites the bal let’s explosive power by re-imagining

its narrative in an uncompromisingly contemporary light. , This is a unique opportunity to

experience two masterpieces of the Parisian avant-garde, staged by Amir Hosseinpour arid Nigel Lowery, whp:

. together form one of Europe’s most innovative creative teams.

'' In "L’enfant et les sortileges" (The

Child and the Spells) a disobedient child assaults everything in his room, including the cat, after he is told off by his mother. Gradually, the objects - furniture,

clocks, crockery - come to life around him. In the garden, events take an even more disturbing turn, when all the trees and animals he has hurt in the past begin to surround him.

A ROCK band from the Ribble Valley is climbing new heights. Rocketdog, which features former

Ribblesdale High School pupil Mark Duckworth (18), of Langho, on lead guitar, has won through to prestigious national finals being held this week in Northampton. The group was formed nearly two

years ago and won the right to repre sent Blackburn College in the Access to Music Northern Festival at The Cock pit in Leeds. They were one of only six hands from all those on Access to Music courses throughout the country who won through to the finals. Their next gig in the North West is

at the Arts in the Park Festival at 5 p.m. in Corporation Park, Blackburn on July 6th.

THE Royal Exchange production of the Beau marchais comedy "The Marriage of Figaro" starts with a bewigged head tumbling into a laundry basket and there are Tricolour badges in caps in the finale, so, clearly, director Helena Kaut-Howson wants us to be aware that the dramatist wrote the play in 1781 and had it per formed only five years

'before the storming of the Bastille signalled the

start of the French Rev olution.

Beaumarchais was

imprisoned briefly by royal decree for the play's political undertones. However, in this splendid

fast-paced romp with all the characteristics of farce, people hidden in cupboards, mistaken identity, disguises, long- lost parents and trickery, It is the comedy that pre vails. Familiar to many

from Mozart's opera, the plot concerns the attempt of Figaro, manservant to Count Almaviva, to get himself married to Suzanna, maidservant to the Countess, and avoid the Count's attempts to seduce Suzanna, and also acquire the dowry he has been promised. Figaro, the stock char acter of the wily servant

who gets the better of his master, is played with energy and clever ironic timing and facial expres sions by Kulvinder Chir, probably best known for "Goodness Gracious

Me", the television com edy series. Nina Sosanya, from

the drama series "Teach ers" and "The Jury" is a pert and attractive Suzanna, well able to look after herself. The casting of these

two perhaps suggests a contemporary moral point about power and the lack of it, but noth ing that really disturbs the comic world. The whole cast, princi-

pals, Count Almavia (Simon Robson) , his countess (Emma Cun ningham) and Cherubi- no, the page with desper ate sexual urges (Samuel Barnett) and those in supporting roles play their parts with panache. The design is excellent and there are plenty of laughs.
