Taxi fares are to rise for first time in three years

by Natalie Cox : .

T A X I fares in the Ribble Valley are going up for the first time in three years. ' , From September 1st, a jour

ney of up to one mile will cost

passengers 50p more. And for those travellingmore

than a mile, it will cost 35p for each one-fifth mile compared to the current charge of 30p. The decision to increase fares

was made by hackney carriage proprietors and private hire oper ators at their annual meeting with

Ribble Valley Borough Council. On Monday night, it was rub

ber-stamped by members of the borough's Policy and 'Finance Committee. Other issues raised at the annu

al meeting which were referred t o ; borough councillors included the .

; lack of female taxi drivers. How ever, no one took up a suggestion put forward by Coun. Philip Nierop (Bolton-by-Bowland) to open up another 10 licences to female drivers. He said: "We should go the

whole hog and say we are in favour of positive discrimination.

Break-in at cricket club

THIEVES went to extraordinary lengths to gain access to the func tion room and bar area of Read Cricket Club. But the only items

they took away in the raid on Sunday night were a pair of 3ft.-high speakers worth £140. They forced a lock to

gain access to an out building, from which they removed ladders. These enabled them to climb on to the roof, dis able the security light and alarm box and get into the main building.

plete the walk in 10 days and will be entirely self sufficient, setting up camp along the way. Mark has already

tackled the Three Peaks Challenge twice and to get fit for next week he has been training keenly. . Each step that Mark

takes will benefit cancer sufferers, as he is being sponsored to raise money for the charity Cancer Research UK. Mark, a father-of-two, has been promised around £700 to

,date. Keeping a close eye on

Mark's progress will be his fiancee, Helen, with whom he will tie the knot in September. The couple both work

at Callender Aeropart Ltd, Altham.

Now it’s training for tenants

BOTH members and officials of Rib ble Valley Borough Council go on training courses - now tenants can do so as well. . Several measures are being adopted

locally to meet the Government's insis tence that tenants of council proper ties have as big a say in their affairs as possible. - A report to the council's Housing

Committee gives details of an agree ment between it and the tenants, including the establishment of a pool of people who can be consulted when necessary. "Customer Care Standards for refur

bishment and planned maintenance are how given out to tenants and regu la r feedback on our performance is undertaken,” says the report?'

"Members of the Tenants’ Partner:

ship Panel are being actively encour aged to attend training courses. One member has already attended a course on ’Introduction to repairs and main tenance1. Another is to attend, with the tenant liaison officer, the Tenant Participation Conference in July." ■ Government policy on e-technology

means that a computer with Internet access has been provided at Showley Court, Clayton-le-Dale, and residents will soon be offered-training. The council's web site will also

include a page for use by tenants and tenants’ groups.

/ ' . The council's agreement with ten

ants on consultation is being revised further and will be considered again by the Housing Committee.' ‘

PEOPLE campaigning over fears about the fall out from the kilns at Castle Cement's Clith eroe plant were pleased this week that Ribble Valley MP Mr Nigel Evans has signed an early day motion on pol lution. The motion calls for

more research into the link between pollution and asthma, which affects one in eight chil dren in his constituency. New scientific research

in America claims to show that pollution can cause asthma. Mr Evans said that

asthma figures in the Ribble Valley were no worse than elsewhere, but added: "People are concerned. There are no two ways about it. If a link between pollution and asthma can be prov en, then further mea sures would have to be taken to reduce the am ount of pollution relea

sed into the atmosphere." He said: "Children in

the Ribble Valley deserve the right to grow up without the fear of devel oping asthma. We need measures in place to make clean air a priority and to reduce levels of nitrogen dioxide, low- level ozone and other pollutants that are known to trigger astma ® Early day motions

are notices of motions given by MPs which are not expected to be debat ed. It is a device to draw attention to an issue and to elicit support by invit ing other MPs to add their signatures.
