was brought to life for the fascinated young sters. They were given a rare opportunity to see a professional at work when Mrs Hideko Kita- mura, a tutor in Japan ese flower arranging paid a visit to the school. Famed for her work in her home country where she is a tutor, Mrs Kita- mura is in England as part of a cultural tour and she agreed to come to Read as a special favour. She created five dis

tinctive arrangements, around Western and Japanese themes and then asked the children and teachers to vote for their favourite ones. Headteacher Mrs

Joyce Shaw said: "The children voted for the more Western display which was full of flowers and the staff opted for the simple lines of the Japanese design. It was fascinating to watch and the children really enjoyed it and they asked some really sensi ble questions afterwards. The youngsters wanted to know if boys did flower arranging in Japan and they were stunned to learn that the country's top flower arranger is in fact a man!” The rare visit was

made possible thanks to Mrs Katsuko Devine, who is a support assis tant to a Japanese pupil at the school. She discov ered that Mrs Kitamura was coming to England and requested that she pay a visit to Lancashire. Pictured are the

a village website like this going is hard work. The site needs continual devel opment to keep people coming back to it, but it can be great fun. • "It’s particularly rewarding when I

get compliments from people all over the world who have enjoyed their visit to the site and our small comer of Lan cashire. A village site such as this offers enormous potential." The other shortlisted website is one

set up by Mr Hayes just after Christ mas, to market child-friendly, water proof keyboards. This site, www.clitheroelancs.co.uk, has succeed

ed in selling this innovative product as far away as New Zealand and attracts many buyers from the USA. Mr Hayes said buyers have included a Washing ton Police Department and the US Navy, as well as garages, engineering companies, the Inland Revenue and Castle Cement nearer home He added: "A good website allows

even the smallest business to showcase their products in a world-wide market place. In just a few months keyboard sales have gone from nothing to world wide, all thanks to the worldwide web."
