JNo Lottery Binding nere, d u i town managed to hit jackpot!
. by Vivien Meath
THERE was no Lot te r y fu n d in g for C lith e ro e 's Ju b i le e Torchlight^ p r o c e s sion, but the organis ers certainly h it the
jackpot. ■ Thousands.of people th ro n g ed th e town's streets for a right royal
knees-up. ?: : ■ Everyone joined in the
parking their own vehi-., cles elsewhere to ensure as much space as possible for the procession, to form. Elsewhere, a small • army of volunteers tried : to ensure th a t visitors from out of town were, directed to available, parking places. - ■ . .. Back in th e town ,
decorative penant-style flags, loaned by the com munity of. Settle, added to the atmosphere as excitement built up. Dal-, matians were ou t m force. Huge plastic ones; bobbed above the heads of the crowd and dozens
PLENTY of effort had gone into the costumes on the float from Booths' Country (TP07) w
party. Even the borough and town council mayors threw formality to the wind, taking to the street as a group of young dancers from Bowland High School passed the ■ official podium in the. Market Place. The result was an impromptu disco watched by Mayors from nearby town and bor ough authorities,- all of whom were impressed, amazed and occasionally rendered speechless by the entire Torchlight spectacle. The weather was per
fect as people began securing their places along the procession route more than an hour before i t began. At 6 p.m., roads were closed as the 35 floats assembled along Chatburn Road. As ever, residents had played their p a r t by
: council offices, guests began assembling. For ■ some, i t was their, first vis it to a Clitheroe Torchlight, b u t with excitement mounting, all knew they were in for a special treat.
.
• There were hiccups. No good Torchlight pass es by- without them. Traffic blocked Pimlico Road for a-short time and Torchlight Commit-- tee secretary and town clerk Mr John Wells was called to help out as one of the horse-drawn floats encountered major prob lems. The reins had been left behind. A quick trip
. to Dawson's which, like many of the town centre shops, stayed open until 7 p.m. on Saturday, resulted in the purchase
. of a length of washing line and the panic was
over. The procession was
described by many as the best ever. Street vendors, colourful bunting and
•of- youngsters from . Brookside Primary School took 101 Dalma- . tians as their theme and dressed as the sp o t ty black and white dogs, cavorting to th e tune "Puppy Love", on one of the early floats. rAs the clock on the
library building, majesti cally draped in red, white and blue, struck 8 p.m., th e Torchlight safety vehicle, courtesy of Rufus Carr, came into sight m the Market Place. Two magnificent ly groomed white horses followed behind, pulling E. H. Booths' No. 1 delivery van. Vintage m ilitary vehicles fol lowed, as an impromptu rendering of "The White Cliffs of Dover" rang out from civic guests seated on the podium. - There was a gap before
the fust of a sea of mag nificent floats came into view. With lights blazing from vehicle after vehi cle, music filling the heavens, there were plen
ty of cries of. delight. Water was the order of this .Torchlight; This year,.it failed to come down'from-the night; skies but, instead, was ■ aimed-at the, crowd by people on almost every other float. The Ribble Valley's. MP, - Nigel Evans, appeared to be on the receiving end of most of th e water pistols. Whether : : they were aimed at the MP or the borough council's chief executive, Mr David- Morris, sitting alongside, no one was too sure, but it was all taken m excel lent humour. Many hours had been
spent preparing the floats and the judges had a difficult decision decid ing on the winners. Not everyone was on the
,-back of a lorry, although Clitheroe Town Band and Slaidburn Silver Band opted for wheels this time and even Percy, the celebrated and now quite elderly Low Moor Pig, was spotted taking the comfortable option. There was no float
however for the Torch light King, Queen and Jester. They were fantastic,
as well as being delight fully original. The crowd loved them. Every single
company, organisation, club; school, care home and individual had put 100 per cent effort into creating an outstanding tableau. Everyone had
favourite, b u t i t was good to see schools and villages involved and even Clitheroe Market, with a tractor-drawn dis play turning back the shopping clock. . And, after the bands,
majorettes, street collec-j tors, torch-holders and’ floats, the evening's cli-i max was a phenomenal- firework display from the illuminated Castle Keep.] Described by many as
th e best ever, some £ 7 ,000-worth of fire-; works exploded over the town and brought tear\ to the eyes of Torchlight Committee chairman,
.Mr Peter Moore... rf . The event had taken
18 months to prepare: The committee is small; swollen on the night by numerous volunteers from service organisa-; tions, but'the entire Rib-; ble Valley owes a great depth of thanks to all those who have given hours of their time to ensure th a t the Jubilee Torchlight will live on in memories for many years tocome.
