um range Mondeo-sized diesel family car market with this Carisma DI-D variant, encouraged by the huge growth in diesel popularity we have seen in the last year. This time round, we have the same four cylinder turbo-charged 1.9-litre capacity but a very, different package within it, .

• stands for Direct In j^ t io n Diesel, a unit which in this , case develops 100 b.h.p. a t 4,000 r.p.m. and 158 lb f t of torque between 1,700 and , 3,250 r.p.m. In other words, plenty of
puUing power right through . the gears. I t has a maximum . speed of 118 m.p.h., and a 0-62 acceleration time of 11.9 sec onds. More importantly a t the pumps, you should return 38.7
m.p.g. (urban average), 62.8 m.p.g. (extra urban) and 38.7 m.p.g. (combined). ; , Broadly speaking, the
Carisma DI-D makes an excel
lent case for itself, being_ £2,000 cheaper than the 1.8- litre petrol GDI yeraion and running around six iniles fur ther on each gallon of fuel. .

You get the same equipment levels, cleaner emissions (so
. lower taxes) and do not lose out too rnuch in flbrformance terms (about a sec6nd-and-a- half slowerto60). You could easily argue that
this is the best Mitsubishi Carisma yet. Affordable, eco nomical, well equipped and sensible, i t is the kind of car
■ you buy if you view the pur chase of a family runabout much as you would a fridge or a washing machine.

the noisy 89 b.h.p. 2.0-litre TD ■unit used in the old Primera line up 7-but then i t would have to be, given the standard of the competition. . To head off cars like Ford’s -
Mondeo TDCi and VW’s Passat TDI PD 130, Nissan boffins talk of features like a variable-nozzle turbo for a flatter torque curve. Impressive as this may be, it is not the sort of thing with which . to impress your dinner party

guests. So here are a few facts. With prices for the base-specifi cation S-trimmed Primera diesel models starting a t £16,100, the Nissan costs around the same as the Ford and a little less than the VW, yet offers a higher specifica tion than either. . All models feature climater :
controlled air conditioning, ; - front, side and curtain a irb ag , a six-speaker CD stereo, a t r ip ' ; computer, electric mirrors, remote central locking, front electric windows and ABS. Sixty should show from rest in
10.9 seconds on the way to 121 m.p.h., while you can expect to average over 45 m.p.g. if you do
not insist on verifying those fig ures. .. . As diesels go, this one is quite ■
refined. Diesel buyers get all • three mainstream trim levels (S, SE and SVE) but cunously miss
: out on the top T-specification • option. Still, given that-you will : need to budget around £21,000 . i for the top SVE estate variant i - with leather, i t isunlikely t h a t ; many, will be wdriying about hot using enough of their cqmpauy ; budgets.

Otherwise of course, i t is the same Primera formula - which
■ means th a t you will either love or hate it.. What you cannott argue
about is th at this car now has a healthy dose of personality - not something you could have said of
its predecessor. Ride and han dling have always been a Nissan Primera strongpoint-and this ■ version is no different. . ■ More importantly however, it is a lot more refined these days, with noise and vibration in the
. cabin usefully reduced, although wind noise is still slightly more insistent than you would expect
- to find on such an aerodynaml- 'ja l ly efficient car. The ride is • excellent. '
