of God, and in care for their own needy towns- peopla One of the daughters
had turned down a promising opera career - and the love of her French voice coach - to remain with her father and the town. Many years later the
, French singer sends a woman (Babette) — who had lost her family at the outbreak of civil war - to live with the sisters. She turns out to be an excel-
■ lent cook,-housekeeper and a shrewd shopper. , The story culminates
in a sumptuous feast pre pared by Babette coincid ing with a memorial to the minister's 100th birthday. “Babette's Feast” is a
multi-layered mystery that dares to provide a lot of answers, including more than a vague hint at the meaning of life itself.

WE’LL HELP YOU PLAN YOUR WEEK AHEAD ""The Memory of^ ^
^ Water"; Library '
..Theatre," Man- . Chester; until April 13th.
:
: I HAD been looking for ward to this production of "The Memory of Water" .
'a t the Library Theatre because it is by Shelagh Stephenson. I have been an admirer
of this dramatist ever since I saw her stunning play "An Experiment with an Air Pump" at the
. ' Royal Exchange a couple' ofyearsago.
"The Memory of ..
Water", which was her first stage play, is just as good and I am happy to report th a t i t is being filmed.;'^;"'';,''/;. . S h e a k e e r i ' ^ f o r
', ihcredibly'funiv dialogue. I t may seem surprising to spend ah' evening laugh- . ing at three sisters prepar ing for the fimeral of their mother, but Stephenson
. managestomakethissit- uation both funny and, at times, heartbreakingly sad. ' My mother had two daughters andso my sis-
. te r and .1 ha've shared . some of the experiences of
the characters in this wonderfully-written play,
which is all about the ties of family and the emo tional baggage that we all
inherit. This production is
superbly acted by Lucy Tregear, Merial Schol- field and Jesrica Lloyd as the three very different sisters and by Matthew Vaughan and Paul Raf- field as the bemused part ners of two of them. This is well worth see
ing and I shall eagerly anticipate the next play.
