Carisma DI-D makes an excel­ lent case for itself, being £2,000 cheaper than the 1.8- litre petrol GDI version and running around six miles fur­ ther on each gallon of fuel. That is not as much of an advantage at the pumps as you might normally expect, evi­ dence of the fact that the GDI unit is a very efficient engine.


You get the same equipment levels, cleaner emissions (so lower taxes) and do not lose out too much in performance terms (about a second-and-a- half slower to 60). You could easily argue that


this is the best Mitsubishi Carisma yet. Affordable, eco­ nomical, well equipped and sensible, it is the kind of car you buy if you view the pur­ chase of a family runabout much as you would a fridge or a washing machine.
