RESIDENTS’ responses to plans to build a car park on a site out of Whalley centre are still awaited. Villagers were asked to put
forward their opinions on a scheme involving the QEII playing field in Station Road. Plans were put on display in the

library and people were invited to go along, take a look and then fill in a questionnaire to make their views known. Business owners and their employees were also sur veyed in a bid to determine their opinions on the proposals.' At last week's meeting of Whal-
ley Parish Council members were told that the data was still being
collated. Councillors also heard that in

Howev er, he added that if a scheme was found that was acceptable to all parties, including residents, as well as the parish and borough councils, Ribble Valley members had agreed to do their best to support it. ■ ___________

young player^ FOR the first time this season, Clitheroe Con7 certs Society featured i string quartet. The audience was fortunate to hear the muchf acclaimed Emperor String Quartet consist-

teamed up in 1992. The first in their pro:
gramme of just three works was Haydn’s F major opus 74, No. 2. The name of the ensemble, the Emperor, would seeiri to imply that Haydn is their speciality. Whether that is true or not, their rendering of the work was a delight. There were particularly pleasing solo passages from second violin in the andante and the viola in the minuetto. porary work by James MacMillan, recently appointed composer in resi dence with the BBC Phil harmonic, in Manchester. This was a striking and exciting piece, although it had very little in common with conventional works for string quartet. There were some very beautiful pas sages played with great feel ing as well as the consum mate technique which the work demanded. Most peo ple I asked seemed to enjoy it.

!ar bodyshop application
sparks debate
A CAR bodyshop off New Row, Knowle Green, sparked a coun cil "preserving the
countryside" debate. Officials recommended
the Planning and Develop ment Committee of Ribble
Valley Borough Council to refuse a. .retrospective
application for1 the busi ness. They suggested'it he
closed down within six months, due to being against policy, outside a settlement, innappropriate in a rural area and likely to set a precedent for non- agricultural uses nearby. But councillors felt that
the business was only on a small scale and general diversification was some times acceptable-in the
countryside.-. :, "We have a. duty to pre
serve the amenities of the countryside, but ,we musn’t stultify, initiative either," declared Coun. Frank Dyson (Clitheroe.) "Vehi cles do exist in the country side, however much we
deplore them." The application was
unanimously approved, but one to put a large extension on the workshop was
refused. .
great pillars of the quartet repertoire was played, that of Ravel in F. This was, once again, a joy to listen to from beginning to end, with some beautiful solo playing from all four instruments, as well as impeccably pol ished ensemble. The audi ence expressed their undoubted appreciation by prolonged applause, which was rewarded with an encore. This jvas a waltz, an early work by the youthful Benjamin Britten. The general opinion
seemed to be that this was one of the best concerts of recent seasons.
