powerful stablemate. You get what you pay for, of course, and
in this case that is the now deleted Satna 1.6 LXi model (which used to cost around £9,000) with a body kit.
. Nothing wrong with that in principle of
course: you could say much the same about Peugeot and Renault rivals. Just do
not run away with the idea that you are getting a cut-price Satria GTi: the Spnnt is not intended to compete in the same
league.

very well, with unprecedent ed standards of quality for an affordable Alfa. Still, it sets no new standards in any given area. Think Italianate Audi A3 and you can pretty much picture it without
ever laying eyes on one. With the'Selespeed
sequential gearbox fitted, however, it is a different story. This is the first com pact family car to come with the option of Fl-style gear changing paddles behind the steering wheel. As a restdt, you have only to drive down the street to feel like Michael Schumacher.

Unlike many automatic
gearboxes with manual options, this is a real manual transmission without a clutch. You change gear by flicking the gear knob back and forth or by using the paddles behind the wheel. These are far better than the fiddly buttons fitted to the larger 156 Selespeed, which shares the same engine and transmission. Only a three-door model
is on offer at present, avail able either with a 1.6-litre engine and a manual gear box or in 2.0-litre form with the Selespeed box as fea
tured here. However, a 2.0-litre man
ual model and a five-door body shape will be with us shortly, plus there is a sportier GTA version to
come. Six airbags come as stan
dard, as does dual-zone cli mate-controlled air condi
tioning and, on this 2.0-litre Lusso model (the only speci fication on offer) a Bose stereo system. State-of-the- art multiplex wiring has made possible the option of
a full-screen voice-activated satellite navigation system with an inbuilt Bose stereo and GSM telephone system. It is not cheap, but the
satellite navigation setup is one of the best available anywhere, as is the Vehicle Dynamic Control, which is a stability control system that aims to prevent the 147

these days. Or at least, that is the way it used to
be. Today, there is another alternative -
Kia's Shuma. There are now two models from
which to choose, an entry-level £8,495

rear seats, central locking, a height- adjustable driver's seat and power for the windows and minors. All models come in five-door body style. . Anyone who did drive the old Meritor model (on which this ear is based) will
find the ride and handling of the Shuma a significant improvement, thanks to re

engineered suspension, which brings a better ride, sharper handling character
istics and improved stability. The Koreans claim, however, that the
long distance comfort that was the sav ing grace of the old ear has been pre served. Certainly, it is still predictable, safe and easy to drive, designed for those wanting to get from A to Bas comfortably as possible, rather than driving enthusiasts. On the road, the latest Japanese-
designed 1.6-litre power plant is willing enough. Kia says that this latest engine is 17% more frugal than the old 1.8 and offers 13 b.h.p. more than the old 1.5- litre unit. At the pumps, you should average approximately 30 m.p.g. around town and between 40-45
m.p.g. on the open road. Inside, there is a surprising amount of
space and all those standard fittings to offer the impression that you are in a far more expensive car.

Porsche in the way that it credits the driver with some leeway before gently step ping in to restore equilibri um if progress is over enthu siastic. Driving a Selespeed-
equipped clutchless 156 often leaves one wondering whether the handbrake is sticking. Not so in the 147. The system has been opti mised for smoother full- throttle gear changes and a
cleverer full-automatic mode, although it still helps to lift off the gas while
changing up through the
box. The way the engine blips
the throttle for you on down changes is one of the endur ing pleasures of using Sele speed, and you will enjoy it even more in the 147. The paddles behind the
wheel are much as you will find in a Ferrari 360 Mode
m .....
na, a car which shares the : Alfa’s razor-sharp steering , response. Unfortunately, ■, | these two Italian products
also share a turning circle visible from space. Finally, performance: 60
from rest takes 9.3 seconds on the way to 129 m.p.h. There is nothing quite
like this car. Nothing with s the same blend of passion and technology. Thank God they still make Alfas.
