In conclusion, one of the

Car bodyshop application

sparks debate

A CAR bodyshop off New Row, Knowle Green, sparked a coun cil "preserving the

countryside" debate. Officials recommended

the Planning and Develop ment Committee of Ribble Valley Borough Council to refuse a. .retrospective application for'the busi ness. They;suggested'it be closed down within six months, due to being against policy, outside a settlement, innappropriate in a rural area and likely to set a precedent for non agricultural uses nearby. But councillors felt that

the business was only on a small scale and general diversification was some times acceptable in the countryside.--.v. "We have a duty to pre

serve the amenities of the countryside, but .we musn't stultify ..initiative either,"

declared' Coun. Frank Dyson (Clitheroe.) "Vehi cles do exist in the country side, however much we

deplore them." The application was

unanimously approved, but one to put a large extension on the workshop was refused. .

great pillars of the quartet repertoire was played, that of Ravel in F. This was, once again, a joy to listen to from beginning to end, with some beautiful solo playing from ail four instruments, as well as impeccably pol ished ensemble. The audi ence expressed their undoubted appreciation by prolonged applause, which was rewarded with an encore. This was a waltz, an ' early work by the youthful Benjamin Britten. The general opinion

seemed to be that this was one of the best concerts of recent seasons.

R.J.N. Insurance talk

THE monthly meeting of Clitheroe. and- District Masonic Fellowship took place in the Village Hall, West Bradford, and 33 members attended. As the planned guest

speaker, was ill) Mrs D. Steer was recruited at short notice. Her talk, "Insur ance; I don't believe it", was well received by the audi

ence. The next meeting will

take place on Monday, March 12th. The speaker

will be Mr R. Schofield, whose talk is titled "Beyond the Mile City”.

Sports centre hit

VANDALS used fence poles to smash windows and secu rity lights at Whalley Ten nis Club in Mitton Road. Over a number of months

there have been various reports of disturbance and acts of anti-social behaviour at the village sports venue. Police are investigating

and anyone with informa tion about any of the inci dents is asked to contact Clitheroe police on 01200 443344.
