Cowboy buiiners are history, says survey

THEY say you can prove anything with fig ures - and the same goes

for surveys. Whatever the subject,

they come up with wonder- fully-subjective results, but they are always worth a

look. Unsurprisingly, the Nat

M

ional House Builders Coun cil has given the industry a very respectable, if not totally clean, bill of health in its annual examination. Its survey claims: "The old image of cowboy bulders has been condemned to the history books, with more than 70% of new homeown ers saying they would buy another property from their

builder." Certainly there is big . .

business being done here- 550 new homes were sold every day in 2000, a little less than in 1999. Buyers of 10,000 of them were sur-

veyed as part of the annual competition to find the country's best house

builders. The general public

received a ringing endorse ment,' as the survey revealed clear evidence that more and more people are concerned about the impact their home will have on the environment. Energy efficiency is

another hot topic, one might say - as many as 57% were happy with their housebuilder's advice. A fraction over four-fifths

of the housebuilders were good at meeting completion dates, while 73% of buyers were delighted with the condition of the home when they moved in.

The survey claimed that

niggling problems after moving in tended to be dealt with swiftly - that is, 57% of new owners were pleased with the builder's performance in rectifying faults. The number who

were not was "only" 20%. Kerb appeal does not just

apply to cars, it now applies to' houses - a feature cer tainly seen on the Ribble Valley's smart now estates. Nationally, 96% are extremely impressed on

their first visit. The council wants

builders to have good mar keting as well as good build ing skills. Nearly 90% of customers said their builder's sales literature was above average.
