FEARS th at spring lambing will lead to another Ribble Valley out break of the stomach bug cryp- tosporidiosis has sparked an attack on North West Water by the region's

top health watchdog. He wants a debate on water supply,

questioning a four-year wait for the com pletion of improvements designed to combat th e bug, which la s t March struck at least 58 borough residents and led to hundreds of local homes having to boil all water used for drinking and food

preparation.

Rev. Chris Cheeseman as chairman and treasurer, Canon Philip Dearden as vice-chairman, business woman Mrs Pauline Price as secretary and Newton village bobby Mr John Bar ber and his wife, Christine, as fund-raising co-ordina- tors. Other officers are Mrs Dilys Gordon, Mrs Bever ley Waller, Mrs Joan Myers, Mrs Susan Garden er and Mrs Anne Peel. In preparation for its

opening, the committee has contacted the art depart ments of Clitheroe Royal Grammar School, St Augustine's RC High School, Bowland County High and Ribblesdale High School Technology College to ask pupils to submit logo designs for the centre. A closing date of March

spring lambing and heavy rainfall. The bulk of local tap water is drawn from Haweswater in the Lake District. I t is piped through an aqueduct, covered in some areas with grazing land. Public health specialists believe that where the microscopic Cryptosporidium parasite is

traced to water supply, rain water carrying contaminated faeces, may have leaked into

thLast year's cryptosporidiosis outbreak was the borough's second in consecutive

vears and was traced to contamination at G r in d le to n Sp r in g s , which a re now no longer in use. The year before, 19 Ribblc

Valley residents were confirmed with the bug but, in both instances, doctors suspect under-reporting of the condition, which may mean that the real number of suffer

ers was much higher. A spokeswoman for North West Water

said: "Water is just one of the means by which Cryptosporidium can be transmit ted. However waterborne outbreaks, though rare, are of concern to us. The com pany is well into delivering a £300m. investment project to tackle Cryptosporid

ium."Investment on this scale obviously can not be completed overnight but, where pos sible and practicable, large-scale projects have been fast-tracked to deliver the bene fits sooner, and a number of short-term measures have been taken," she added.

.................................................................................... .... # - Massive Pendle Hill search for family by Peter Dewhurst

A HUGE search operation was launched on Pendle Hill on Tuesday evening after a family of four - including chil dren of just three and two - went missing.

Police officers were joined by the

Rossendale and Bowland Pennine search and rescue teams as ambu lance crews stood by to take the

casualties to hospital. A helicopter from RAF Valley

on Anglesey was scrambled and set off for Pendle, and two farm ers on quad bikes with powerful

headlights also joined the hunt. The Almond family from Nelson

had left in the afternoon for a walk on Pendle. By teatime the fog had descended and they were lost. Mr Anthony Almond managed to get a message to a friend on his mobile phone, and police were alerted. But it was not clear where they were.
