Board. Jenny, who has also
exhibited at the Platform Galley in Clitheroe, does not blow glass, but creates pate-de-verre bowls and
sculptural vessels in a kiln,
as well as tiles, wall pieces and decorative elements for inclusion in interiors and
furniture. While she is in the States
Jenny aims to gain valuable experience. “Many Ameri can glass artists produce sculptural work which is as yet not really paralleled in this country, in terms of size and ambition. I am looking to develop my present sculptural work in casting and pate-de-verre and to experiment with working
on a large scale. “Marianne’s studio has
facilities for large-scale cast ing as well as good links with several other high pro file glass artists also work ing in Rhode Island, and access to advice materials
and technical support at the Rhode Island School of
Design.” Much of Jenny’s work
expresses mankind’s spiritu al relationship with the environment and she is hop ing th a t working in New England will inspire her. She aims to create at least one piece which will be exhibited in the States or
Paris. She will also spend a
week at the annual confer ence of the Glass Art Soci ety at the Corning Glass Centre in upstate New York, with delegates from
all over the world. Jenny has benefited from
a business start-up training course with Clitheroe Enterprise Agency and will
run her business at a new farm shop, Bashall Barn, which is being set up at Bashall Eaves, near
Clitheroe. Simon Barnes, a director
of the new company, said: “We are very fortunate to have Jenny on board. The foot and mouth epidemic is causing some uncertainty about when we can launch hut, I am sure we will be fully up and running before Jenny returns from the US
in July. “Our intention is to give
people an interesting excur sion as well as shopping at a specialist food and craft shop - Jenny’s presence, creating some wonderful sculptures in full view.wll he a unique attraction.”

Nutrition firm is aiming for slice of slim market
A EAT chance to become a leading player in the weight loss market has been seized by a Ribble
Valley sports nutrition company. The firm of Science in believe CLA Mpplranen ^
Sport, based a t Ashwood Laboratories in Brockhall Village and better known for i ts range of energy replacement drinks, has
1 just launched 90 capsule I packs of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) into health and sports shops to be sold as a dietary sup- plement.
Feeding 3-4g. of CLA per
day to people has been shown to significantly reduce body fat mass in the overweight and obese, according to the results of a trial published last year in the influential Journal of
Nutrition. Other studies have shown
th a t CLA, which is pro
duced naturally by the body, may also increase lean muscle mass, improve immune function, increase bone mineralisation and
reduce the effects of harden ing of the arteries (athero sclerosis), as well as have cancer protective benefits. Explaining Science in
Sports' decision to launch its synthetically-created
CLA, director Mr Tim Lawson, who takes the sup plement himself, said: "CLA as a nutritional sup plement is widely available in America, hut as yet, not
in Europe. "From the studies th a t
are currently ongoing, we
tion is set to become very important in the next decade since it has been shown to naturally reduce body fat. We obtain CLA from the food we eat, but its levels have been falling because of intensive farm ing practices. There is spec ulation th a t low levels of CLA in the modern diet may be a contributory fac tor in the high levels of obe sity in Western societies." Mr Lawson, a sports sci
entist, believes that taking CLA capsules has helped
him to lose more than three stones in weight in just six months. Added 34-year-old Mr Lawson, who is 6ft.2in.: "I have been combining supplementation with a low
calorie diet and regular exercise. In the last six months, I have dropped from 15 stones to 12 stones, decreasing my waist mea surement from 36in. to
31in." A competitive touring
cyclist and lecturer in nutri tion, Mr Lawson has just returned from an invitation tour of Europe's training camps, where he has been giving runners, cyclists and triathletes advice on food
for sport. Science in Sports’ CL.A
supplement is available from Clitheroe's Peda Power cycle shop and Well Springs health store.
