R I S I N G y o u n g opera star Kate Lad ner is tak ing her big bustle to Preston. . . The bus
v'i
tle goes along with the title
ride of Manon, a woman tempted away from her intention to take Holy Orders by the lure of plea sure, riches and romance in Massenet's best-known
opera. Kate, pictured above, one
of Britain's most exciting young singing talents, said. "Manon's costumes are absolutely gorgeous. "They get redder and red
der as she becomes more voluptuous. And her rear gets bigger and bigger throughout the showl" "Manon" is set in the
Paris of the 1880s, when fashionable women knew
exactly what to do with a decent-sized bustle. It's no surprise that Manon ends up with a temptingly Rube- nesque posterior. "Manon" is one of two
productions by English Touring Opera visiting the Charter Theatre, Preston,
on May 15th and 16th. Mozart's fairytale story
"The Magic Flute" is being performed on the first night of English Touring Opera's
visit to Preston. The company, which
always performs in English, is offering something special at Preston for audiences. At 6-30 p.m. each night,
members of the artistic team will present a pre-per formance talk on each opera, giving an informal and fascinating insight into the music, the production and the company.

review by Pippa Munro Kissing Sid James; Octagon Theatre, Bolton
THIS new comedy by Robert Farquhar is both hilarious and touching, a two-han- der centred on the attempts of an unlike ly couple to find love in a ghastly chmtz- frilled bedroom in a cheap seaside B&B. Mother's boy and stationery salesman

playwright.
