F you have always fancied a convertible, but not

wanted the hassle and security risk of (hat fabric

roof, then the Ford Ka Sun Collection may be the one for

you. A full-length fabric top,

opening up the entire upper part of the car, seems to be a pretty good compromise. Par ticularly when the car in ques tion is already recognised as one of the best in its class. Ford’s Ka is still Britain’s

best budget car, according at least to What Car magazine, which has named it so for the

second year running. Over 160,000 have been

sold in the UK since launch, some 47,300 last year. Those once arresting looks no longer make passers by stop and stare: the little Ford has become an accepted part of

High Strcetlifc. But familiarity brings with

sales, something that the peo ple at Ford are understand ably keen to avoid, given that Britain is virtually the only

will be the wncky-looking StrcctKa, a proper convertible

with an Audi TT-slyle look and a proposed £12,000 price

tag. That is a little way off, how

ever, so for the time being interest will need to be kept bubbling by the Sun Collec tion model featured here. Around 600 of these mid

range Collection models will be produced for the British

market. All will have the full- length, power-operated canvas roof we alluded to earlier. This adds £500 to the Col

lection model’s asking price, creating a £8,560 tag that stacks up quite well against tin-top rivals like SEAT’S Arosa 1.4S (£8,480) and Volk swagen’s Lupo 1.4S (£8,620). As part of the Collection

deal, you also get metallic paint, power steering, electric windows, stereo radio/cas sette, leather-covered steer ing wheel and the inevitable

driver’s airbag. In addition, to ensure

nobody makes off with your pride and joy, there are high- security door locks and a

Safeguard immobiliser. If all this kit is not enough,

you can also specify any of a selection of extras at an addi tional cost. These include alloy wheels, air conditioning or a passenger airbag.

Otherwise, the recipe is

pure Ka, this one of (he few truly innovative vehicles to be

produced since the Mini. Customers come from so

many walks of life—and so many other types of car: 4x4s, coupes, roadsters - you name

it. In spite of its size, the Ka

is as safe as any family car on the road today, meeting ail current and future safety leg islation for front and side impacts. It comes with a driver’s

airbag, seat belt grabbers and optional passenger airbags. Under the bonnet, the

Endura-E 1.3-litre engine is (lie same as that yon would

find in an entry-level Fiesta. Even though it was fresh

ened up for use in the Ka, this old-fashioned 1.3-litre power '

plant is hardly the last word in engine design. It runs out of puff very soon after you begin to rev it and takes 13.8 seconds to reach 60 m.p.h. on the way

to 96 m.p.h. True, it performs its job

adequately, but this is a far cry from Ford’s potent and sweet-sounding little 1.25- litre Zetcc powertrain. I Still, you cannot have

everything. Ka Sun Collection

buyers will, in any case, almost certainly have another, larger car in the family.

4 Schumacher to victory in F

last year’s Formula One World Championship, the company wanted some way of trumpeting the fact. Hence the Seicento Michael Schumacher spe cial edition model. But hold on. This is a

city car is it not? And have not city cars about as much to do with Fer- rari’s lead driver as a superbike has with a moped? You could say that,

although this is based on the Sporting version,

which actually feels great to drive given the right

twisty road. • Anyway, Herr Schu

macher’s first car was a Fiat Cinquecento, the car that this Seicento is based on. Michael has come a long way since then, of course — and so has this

baby Fiat. Not quite as far as some

of its city car competitors. I '

IAT just could not

resist it. Having bankrolled Michael

you might argue. This still is not something in which you would happily under take a very long journey. Still, its sheer joie de

vivre overcomes much of this: it is not going to be an only car for most users anyway. Let us start with the

Schumacher bits and pieces. We need, after all, to justify the extra £1,100 that this version costs over the standard £6,790

Sporting model. For £7,894, you get the

normally optional Abarth styling kit. This includes

side skirts with the Michael Schumacher logo, which also appears (along with his signature) on the rear hatch. There are also Schu macher-branded kick plates, a leather steering wheel and gear lever with red stitching, 14in. alloy wheels (featuring new

Fiat wheel centres) shod with low profile tyres, anti-lock brakes, alumini um sports pedals and a

TO THE

Schumacher car is a Seicento iH tSIp

special limited edition plate to identify the car. Standard equipment

runs to a driver’s airbag, a manual sunroof, electronic

power steering, electric windows, central locking, a Sony single CD player and an engine immobilis

er. Only two colour choices

— Tiziano Red and Broom Yellow - are available. And you can buy the

car on 0% finance over three years with a 30%

deposit. ; As with all the latest

Seicento models, this car gets Fiat’s new 1.1-litre FIRE engine. Like the

previous 1.1-litre unit, this develops 54 b.h.p., but does so 500 r.p.m. ear lier in the rev range. There is also a bit more

pulling power (65 lb ft of torque) which again you have access to at lower speeds. This means that the car should feel more responsive with fewer gear changes needed around

town. To differentiate this

flagship Sporting model, shorter gear ratios have been installed. As a result, the rest to 60 sprint time has been reduced from 14.5 to 13.5 seconds, with the top speed still a mod-

est 93 m.p.h. Here is a car that, on

paper at least, should only be one step above a shop ping trolley. Yet once you settle into the deeply con toured, if a little slim, dri ver’s seat and grasp the chunky little steering wheel, something very strange happens. Even the most staid drivers are gripped with a sudden

sense of enthusiasm. In its basic guise the

Seicento may well be a car designed originally for shopping trips and school runs, but in Sporting form, it becomes a real pocket rocket.
