for your family by Tim Procter
ANOTHER local school is claiming a place in the Ribble Val ley's high-quality edu
cational set-up. There are so many appli
cants for places at Oakhill College, Whalley, that some
have to be refused. "The school goes from
strength to strength. Inquiries for places are higher than ever before," reveals headteacher Mr Philip Mahon in the col lege's newsletter. He says that he is delighted that the vast majority of parents are more than pleased with the progress their children are
making. n
"Numbers are continuing to increase, certain areas of the school are now full and

a number of applicants have been refused places,
explains Mr Mahon. This increased interest
the foot and mouth crisis has delayed an unusual and impressive "first". A BMX slalom track
has enabled the governors to seriously consider the starting date for the next phase of the school's devel opment. Mr Mahon says . that he sincerely hopes that in the next newsletter there will be news of the starting date for the building of the new preparatory school
classrooms. "Thank you for your con
tinued support, enabling us to achieve these major mile stones in the school devel opment plan,” says Mr
Mahon. Fund-raising goes on - a
brick appeal has so far brought in £ 3,000 and a "Smartie tube" collection £1,123. The school aims to have just as active a sport ing side as bigger ones, but
°
being laid out in the exten sive grounds had been held
up by the weather. Then Reigill's contrac
tors were able to start work, and got the line of the track dug out and over 80 tons of
stone laid. "Now that we can see the
track on the ground we know it's going to make a far better course than we anticipated," says the newsletter. "Then, disaster. The Ministry of Agriculture
arrived and placed a prohi bition order on the new fields," says the newsletter. It is hoped that the
jumps and berms for the cycles will not be delayed

researching the history of the paddles since 1988, and as yet has been unable to
establish their age. They have been identi

James Exton is a county- level rugby player who refused a trial with Sale because, if selected, the time commitment would be too much. Becky Stephen son has just joined Everton Girls' FC, having previous ly played for Blackburn Rovers and Chorley.
