Crossroads te^m pleased at return of popular soap

THE return of a televi sion soap is being wel comed by a Clitheroe-

based organisation. Complete with some

familiar faces, "Crossroads" returned to TV screens across the country this week. However, it was a sto ryline featured in the pro gramme almost 30 years ago that resulted in the set ting up of an organisation which has gone on to help more than 28,000 carers across the country, includ ing the Ribble Valley. In 1973, Sandy Richard

son, the then motel owners son, had a car accident and was temporarily paralysed. He was cared for at home by his mother. Following on from the storyline, Rugby resident Noel Cranei^ who was being cared for by his mother, wrote to the televi sion company. His letter prompted ATV to donate £10,000 to set up a project

aimed at helping carers in practical ways and relieving the stress experienced by

at. hplnintr carers

•many of them. A year later Crossroads helped 28 fami

lies, this year it will be

almost 30,000. Currently Crossroads -

Caring for Carers supports a network of 207 affiliated schemes providing 3.7m. care hours each year and employing more than 4,000 trained care workers. Officials point out that

without the help of the soap and ATV it would not have been possible to deliver the service it currently pro vides. They hope that with its return to the small screen the soap will contin ue to highlight the needs of

carers. Anyone wanting more

CounciPssearch for funds to meet increased Valley need for pitches

DETAILED research has shown an increasing interest in soccer and

rugby across the area. However, the Ribble Val

ley Borough Council will need to introduce "signifi cant developments" to keep pace with the demand for

sports pitches. Efforts are being made to

find grants and other exter nal funding to see wnat money might be available. I t has been suggested that a local football forum could be set up to co-ordinate needs - and the ways of meeting them.

A report to the Com- muity Committee says that currently some 2,000 young people

i are members o

girls now play it, and there is a need to provide more appropriate junior and mini-soccer facilities. "Although local clubs see

t w o

the council as the main provider of football pitches in the borough i t cannot cater for all demand and therefore teams search out other facilities in order *° fulfil their fixtures. The standard of such pitches

varies greatly." The council, points out

the report, has invested £120,000 in pitches over

recent years and spends £30,000 on looking after them each year. Most,

years and spends if not all, adult

teams who want a council pitch can get one. . However, only 15 of the

Ribble Valley's 54 main stream junior squads play on council pitches and some use private sites outside the borough. The establishment of Ribble Valley leagues would help to reduce travel needs and help manage pitch provision. There are also village

teams w o use

teams who use their own, or school, fields.

All-weather training .

facilities are in short supply and places which are not always suitable have to be used, says the report.

More work is now being

done on the issue, some in conjunction with plans to extend facilities at Edisford, but nothing will happen for

a year or two. New changing accomo

dation, all weather training and more pitches are sug

gested. cer pitches could be juniors. Two dedicated mini-soc-

cer pitches could be provid ed a t Castle Fields, Clitheroe, and the changing I

rooms improved. If three pitches could be

developed at Calderstones, Whalley, adult soccer could move there from Roefield, freeing accommodation for |

The council could also

support school and other "community use" pitches,

including those owned by clubs with their own

premises. i MoWifyPfortucttlrt -y ; sifOPRIDER scooters
