desire to attract a more youthful clientele looking for a dynamically-capable car. The interior of the X-TYPE sets new ^


standards of quality and, indeed, moderni­ ty for Jaguar, redressing many of the grumbles that were heard at the o - n l ’j launch. The fascia retains the “plank - a long swathe of wood running the width of the dashboard - but the major dials are housed in a modern binnacle rather than in individual recesses as in the XK8. What is very impressive is the way that Jaguar has managed to blend traditional


touches, like wood veneers and chrome cappings, with modem must-haves, such


as multi-function LCD screens, airbags and multi-speaker audio systems. Compact executive cars like this do not


usually provide much space and, unlike its German rivals, the X-TYPE will be ini­ tially hampered by the lack of an estate version. Still, the 452-litre boot is said to be the largest ever on a Jaguar and the capacity can be increased still further by folding down the rear seat’s (sadly option­


al) 70/30 split backrest. It is a mouth-watering proposition -


rakish good looks, an unparalleled level of fit and finish, an overwhelming power advantage backed up by four-wheel drive and that Jaguar badge on the bonnet. With future models already said to


include a 2.0-litre V6 entry-level model, a ferocious BMW M3 challenger, a diesel option and even estate variants, Jaguar might just have hit the bullseye with its
