OR Coronation S tre e t’s Curly Watts , the fe s t iv e se a so n has proved to be an eventful time, and this Christmas looks set to be equally
memorable. Two years ago ex-wife Raquel turned up
on his doorstep to reveal he had a daughter he never knew existed. Last Christmas he wed his policewoman girlfriend Emma, played by Angela Lonsdale. And this year they are expecting another
happy event with the arrival of their first child. Kevin Kennedy, who plays the hapless
Curly, says: “It’s a boy although I can’t tell you what his name is.”'

“The birth goes fairly smoothly by Corona- .

factor’. I’m looking forward to playing a new dad and seeing how Curly will cope with the baby while his mum goes out to work. “Curly missed out on the birth of his daugh
ter Alice, and so I think he is well and truly fired-up to be a dad this time around. He’s up for it, including all the mistakes - and no doubt
he will make some. “There seems like there is always something

happening for Curly at Christmas. I don’t know what to expect for the next one, he

Coronation Street moments came when Sarah Lancashire returned as dizzy blonde Raquel and dropped the bombshell that he was already
a dad.
actresses who have been cast opposite me over the years. Maybe it is because I’m so rubbish. But I’m consistently rubbish,” he jokes. It is more than 18 years since Kevin made
“I’m lucky because of the quality of the . . .
his Coronation Street debut, arriving as part of the team who emptied Weatherfield’s dustbins. “Coronation Street is probably the best gig
in the world,” he says. “I have been very lucky. I originally only . . „
came in for four episodes.” Over the years he has been involved in some
dramatic storylines but he reveals that one of Curly’s comedy moments is his favourite. “My scenes with Bettabuy’s manager Reg | Holds worth were the funniest things I’ve ever

was over in a matter of weeks. ^ After years of living in the public spotlight
Kevin says he takes his soap fame in his stride. “There are advantages and disadvantages to
being well-known,” he says “But the advantages far outweigh the dis
advantages. It’s up to you how you handle it, says the actor who has openly talked about his
battle with booze in recent years. Kevin was just 22 years old when he made
his Street debut back in 1983, when he was
fresh out of drama school. For the first five years of his career he split
his time between acting and his other love, music. He acted by day and played bass for an Irish show band called Borderline at night. Last year, he decided to dust off his old gui
tar and have a stab at the pop charts. He started writing music again for his wife, Claire, when
he was in a rehab clinic being treated for his drink problem.Originally he had been in a band with Johnny Marr and Andy Rourke, who
went on to form The Smiths. But his own solo single. Bulldog Nation,
which was released last year failed to reached the heady heights of his former bandmates. In fact, it did not even make the Top 40. Even so, he remains upbeat about the whole
experience. “The single .did very well, it sold 24.000
copies. One week I was at No 48 - wedged between Madonna and Geri Halliwell - w hich is not a bad placed to be wedged." he said.
