OU have been realistic with your budget, you have perused the price lists and you have finally given up


and started scanning the used sections. I t is a sad fact that £7,000 does not buy too


much new metal. You could opt for


. something Korean, but probably do not want to put up with your mis­ chievous friends enrolling you for the Saga holidays mailing


list. Fiat’s Punto Go spe­


cial edition could be the


answer.' This is a very


switched-on piece of marketing from Fiat. It has already successfully positioned the Punto range as the perfect urban scoot for savvy twenty and thirtysome- things who appreciate a little Latin spirit. Where the budget


Fiat Punto models differ from, say, budget Fiesta, Corsa, Clio or Peugeot 206 variants is that they feel definitive. Drive a basic Fiat Punto and you cannot escape the feeling that this was how the car was designed to


be. By contrast, the


sporty HGT model just feels overloaded, where­ as in a Peugeot 206 you will forever be jealously eyeing 206CC or GTi drivers, resentful of your lowly place in the Peu­ geot pecking order. That is not to suggest


that going without is something we would happily sign up for, Spir-

standing. I f you could combine


the low price of the best Puntos with a smatter­ ing of equipment that helps make life at the helm that little bit hap­ pier, surely that would be a sure-fire winner? Fiat certainly seems


to think so, and the Punto Go weighs in at a decidedly definitive £7,850, just £329 above the price of the basic 1.2


model. Let us get hard-head­


ed. What does your £329 extra buy? Should you be wading


into the Fiat options list armed with a ready wal­ let and a basic Fiat Punto 1.2, then £329 would not go too far. Electric front win­

as standard, but sports seats would account for your allowance, and as they are fitted as stan­ dard to the Punto Go, you may well surmise that this is the way to,

cassette with sub­ woofer fulfils the basic duties pretty well, and gives a far richer sound than the standard Punto’s four-speaker


affair. Still, it would have


been nice to see a CD player included. After


all, when was the last time you went out and bought a cassette? Likewise, the omis­


sion of ABS is increas­ ingly becoming some­ thing of a no-no in this


sector. The Fiat Punto Go


certainly has a lot going for it. Decent equip­ ment, sharp styling, a cheeky personality, all backed up by bargain basement running costs and a low upfront price are what buyers in this sector are looking for. Can you afford to Go without?


An estate with no excess baggage by Andy Enright


HERE is some­ thing of a renais­ sance going on in


the estate car market. For a spell during the 90s the estate was for­


gotten, but models such as the Saab 9-5 Estate arc now regaining popu­ larity. Get behind the wheel of Saab’s latest load-lugger and you will soon realise why. Perceived wisdom was


that if you had either a large family or a large load to move around, you bought a large estate car. No other viable choices existed. Come the ’90s we saw-


people abandoning the estate in favour of mon­ ster lx ls and increasing­ ly massive MPVs. As most buyers


expunged the novelty of driving round in a wal­ lowing leviathan from their systems, they have gradually reacquaintcd themselves with the appeal of the estate. This being so, Saab’s


root and branch updating or (he 9-5 Estate range could not have come at a better time. The latest round of


revisions arc said to have encompassed 1,260 dif­


ferent modifications, but the effect is subtle. The latest model has a


smoother, if somewhat beakicr, front end, the bumper jutting forth by an additional 20mm. Bi-xenon headlamps


that illuminate in a cool blue are another change, and the air intake that runs the width of the under-bumper area has also been cleaned up, giving (he 9-5 Estate a far more amorphous


front end. It is under (he skin

ship with Isu/.u, the engine is pleasantly refined and has an exhilarating mid-range surge although is sur­ prisingly shy of low-end


torque. This unit is joined by


the more familiar four- cylinder 2,2-litre TiD engine taken from the 9-


3 line up. Otherwise Saab 9-5


customers will not be shocked by the reappear­ ance of a set of powerful petrol engines that boast some pretty impressive figures. The 150 b.h.p. 2.0-litre


turbo four kicks the range off, while a 185 b.h.p. 2.3-litre and a creamy 200 b.h.p. 3.0- lifre V6 are all familiar favourites.

pioneering MPVs are on the agenda - Renault. Having blazed a trail

with the Espace, the French company popu­ larised the mini-MPV market with the Scenic and looks set to branch out with the luxurious Avantime MPV/coupe I t is, however, the


Scenic that has been the company’s golden child and it has spawned a whole host of copy cats - some good, others decidedly second rate. Belatedly, the compe­


tition cottoned on to the fact that the Scenic was going to create a market even bigger than that sired by the Espace. Almost every major


maker you can think of has a mini-MPV on its books. Among these is Vauxhall, whose seven- seat Zaf ira provides Renault with its stiffest competition, and Cit­ roen, whose aggressively priced Xsara Picasso is picking up floating mini-MPV voters. Hence the need for a


completely revised Scenic, which loses the Megane tag but gains even more of the lifestyle features that have made the model such a runaway success across Europe. Although it still only


has five seats, many families will feel that the Renault still shades its rivals for sheer practical


appeal. All the seats now slide


around on rails, so you can position them exact­ ly. There is a redesigned glovebox and useful trays under both front
