people described as "scruffy
individuals". Other activities involve
thefts of machinery such as lawn mowers and power wash ers, tools and diesel fuel which are kept at farms, outbuildings and garages of rural homes. Two vehicles considered to be

connected to these incidents are a white Vauxhall Cavalier and a blue Ford Transit van, both possibly of "G" registration. They are thought to be used by groups working together.
Clitheroe police, said: "This is classic rural crime and occurs mainly between midnight and 5 a.m." He said that night hours are advantageous to these activities, but that the sounds of running engines, unusual noise and the slamming of car doors are not normal in quiet locations at those times, so peo ple woken or noticing anything should check and note registra tions of vehicles and descrip tions of anyone seen.

activities may also be spotted by those whose employment, such as milk and newspaper deliveries, takes them out in the early hours. Insp. Ford asks everyone be aware of abnormal activities and contact Clitheroe police on 01200 443344 if any thing suspicious is noticed.

GRANTS are about to be made available from the Dales Re covery Appeal, set

£500,000 on their way towards th e appeal's £1 million target, and an as sessment panel h a s b e en fo rm ed to consider applications for the cash grants.
I These should come from within the area of the Craven archdeacon ry, which spreads from Sedbergh in the north to Denholme, south of Keighley and west into the trough of Bowland.
Birthday! Greetings
People who do n o t know if th e y qualify geographically should telephone the appeal
office. Appeal chairman John Sheard said: "These grants will be open to small businesses, volun tary organisations and individuals in Graven and the Ribble Valley who have been badly affected by the foot and

mouth epidemic but who have fallen outside the net for compensation from official sources. "That could include
small farmers whose stock has not been culled but who have suffered because they cannot move their animals to market." Other people who
work in the agricultural- support field such as dry-stone wallers and sheep shearers whose livelihoods have been devastated could also benefit, along with scores of small business es such as B&Bs, pubs, restaurants and shops. In the voluntary sec

to apply and said: "We know from experience that Dales folk are reluc tan t to ask for outside help: i t is a m a tte r of pride, self reliance, but in this case we ask people to overcome that reluc- 'tance, for we are talking
about the future. "If we lose these small
businesses and voluntary groups, Craven and the Ribble Valley will be socially and economical ly a much poorer place." Applications

Car had all its four wheels
taken in theft at Barrow ALL four wheels were taken from a car parked in Catlow Terrace, Barrow, at the
weekend. The vehicle was jacked up during the night and
its alloy wheels, complete with tyres and valued at £600, were removed. The car was left resting on old
tyres. The incident follows a similar theft of alloy wheels
from a car parked off Mitton Road in Whalley dur ing the previous week. Both cars were Vauxhall Corsa B models, and there is concern that thieves
may be focusing on this type of car. Police are asking for help with information about
the thefts. Anyone having knowledge about the inci dents or being offered alloy wheels at a reduced price is requested to contact them on 01200 443344.
