[Frugal Focus
hv Jonathan Crouch A
FEW years ago, you bought a Ford because it was either
I well priced, well packaged or well equipped; you cer tainly did not expect to
enjoy driving it. Today, however, things
I arc very different: if you I doubt that, you have only to I get behind the wheel of a Ford
Focus.Winner of the 1999 Car
of the Year title, the Focus has attracted worldwide 1 acclaim for the way that it
1 brings the fun of driving back to ownership of an affordable family hatch back. Nor, unlike some other rivals, do you have to stretch to the most expen- I sive models in order to rel
ish a stint at the wheel. Take the affordable
Zctcc models-or at least, take the petrol versions. The 1.4 and 1.6-litre vari ants are fine, while the 1.8 and 2.0-litre models arc positively desirable, free-
I revving and fun in a way I you simply would not expect
1 from a car of this class. ^ So why introduce a diesel
into the mix, particularly one that even Ford would
not suggest is really aimed at the sportier Zetec-orien-
tated driver. The company’s new com
mon rail TDci engine fits the sporting diesel bill rather better, but costs a lit
tle more. And Zetec, by some mar
gin, is the most popular specification level of the UK’s most popular family-
car. So dealers need the
widest possible range lo sell with and prices that start from the most affordable level possible. There you are: a marketing decision,
purd and simple. Which leaves us with the
model featured here, the
Focus Zetcc TDdi. There is a choice of
cither three or five-door hatchback body styles at prices which vary between
£12,550 and £13,050: in
other words, around £90 more than the equivalent petrol-powered 1.0-lilre ver
sion. There is no saloon or
estate option at Ibis trim level: for that, you will either need to move up lo pricier LX specification or (for an estate) gel the more basic CL-lrimmed model. . Like other Zetecs, this
one comes decently equipped. Standard equip ment includes alloy wheels, driver and passenger airbags, driver’s seat height adjustment, a good quality stereo system, central lock ing and electric front win dows. Plus there’s the peace of mind of a 12-ycar body work warranty. Since the Focus lias the
longest wheelbase in its class and the highest
roofline, you will not be sur prised to learn that it feels the most spacious car in its sector, although from the outside, it is no higger than
its rivals. The designers created it
to fit a wide range or dri vers from a seven stone 'lit
10in. woman to a 17 stone
6ft 8 in. mail. It is also one of the few
family hatchbacks that can comfortably accommodate
three across the buck seat. We parlicuarly liked the
little touches; the two-touch remote control that pre vents you unlocking all the doors at the first plip; the key-operated lock for the bonnet, hidden behind the Ford badge on the grille; the “gel-you-homc” elec tronics that keep the engine running even if all the coolant disappears through a hole in the radiator.

, 4 9 5 MB Verso genes thrown into the
mix. The signature styling
touch is the “double
wedge” design applied to the side doors. Whereas
most cars have a clearly defined “belt line”, in other
words the line marked by the bottom of the side win dows, the YRV junks this styling tradition. Instead there are two big
windows which cant upwards at the bottoms. Distinctive certainly, but does it work aesthetically: The jury is still out on that
one.
