it still works. So well, in fact, that Volkswagen

bought one. A number of them are actually a whole lot of fun to drive and all of them need a good deal less attention in the service


bays. For another thing, prices


have tumbled, so you can probably afford something better than you might


expect. In 1996, a new Vauxhall Astra Merit 1.4i would


have cost you approximately £11,045; some 36 months on, trade experts reckon that if you shop around, you could now drive away in a nearly- new version of the same car for not a lot more. The net result of all that,


of course, is that used prices have taken a severe bashing. Instead of the three or four-year old family hatchback you were expecting to haggle for, you could find yourself behind the wheel of a year-old model, carefully run-in and with the vast majority of the manufacturer’s warranty still valid.


CARS TO CONSIDER An unusual choice to


start with, Mazda’s 323. Examples of the recently- replaced model are still not that common on the used car lots, but the previous post-1989 shape can be had - and at surprisingly affordable prices. To refresh your memory,


this was - and still is -the only family hatchback you could buy with pop-up headlamps. Only ever available in the UK with two engines and one body style, it was bought mainly as a second car. Another, more common,


Japanese second-hand family hatchback choice is Nissan’s Almera. This was a Sunny for enthusiastic drivers - a Nissan with attitude. That was just as well


because the styling was unusual and equipment


levels not overly generous. Reliability and brilliant


handling compensate; this is a family hatchback you could enjoy owning. Renault’s Megane is


another name that may well appeal to discerning family hatchback buyers. For the used buyer, there


is never been a better time to pick up a well-priced Megane, with all models on the market in substantial numbers. Finally, a solid selection -


VW’s Golf. Here, you get a car that is built to last, good to drive and offers safe and solid motoring for not- too much money. The GTis offer a civilised


alternative to many other hot hatchbacks and are usually worth more second­ hand than most rivals.
