MP in crisis talks with hard-hit rural businesses pledges his help
by Julie Frankland
WORRIED members of the Ribble Valley's rural business commu nity have held crisis talks with local MP Nigel Evans' over foot
and mouth disease. Mr Evans travelled
from Westminster for the emergency meeting at the Parker's Arms, Newton, where he was told of impending financial disas ter and potential job loss es as the o u tbreak of infection continues to keep visitors away from the countryside. Among the 30 businesses
represented at the meeting was Holden Glough Nurs ery, based in Holden. Its proprietor, Mr Peter
Foley, presented year-on- year sales figures, which showed his March trade 70.2% down on last year. - Said Mr Foley: "I usually recruit extra seasonal staff at this time of year, but instead of advertising vacancies, I am actually reducing the hours of my existing employees. "The Government has
i
sent out mixed messages regarding what people can and cannot do on visits to the countryside, which has caused confusion. People are therefore opting to stay away. ' “My Saturday trade is
90% down on what I would expect for this time of year. “My mail order business

FOOT AND MOUTH Nigel Evans MP
The outbreak of foot and mouth has had an enormous impact on
farming, associated agricultural businesses and tourism in the area. No one should underestimate the ripple effects of this awful disease on our area.
- It is right that the Government concentrate its efforts on containing and eradicating this disease. The Government has announced that a recovery package will be available as soon as this disease is eliminated.
In the meantime we must do all we can to support our businesses affected by the disease.
