SOME people think Japanese car makers still only crib ideas from the West - but Toyota’s FXS sports car at this week’s Tokyo motor show proves how wrong
they are. The letters stand for
‘future experimental sports’ because this is a concept - a car to test opinions and h in t at
future models. Toyota says FXS has
been designed under the theme of “a simple and sexy form with a sense of presence”. It is powered by a 4.3-litre V8 engine and has a six-speed man ual but clutchless trans
mission. I t is a beautiful car
with a low and wide body and deep blue inte rior. The body is said to
be highly rigid, suggest ing that handling would
match its looks. Toyota is growing in confidence, and journal-
ists who saw the FXS on press day were convinced something like it would
go into production. More outrageous con
cepts than the FXS were on show at Tokyo, like the Isuzu Zen. This is a four-seater sports utili- ty/panel van with an interior which converts into a traditional tea room, with bamboo flooring and Tatami
woven mats. The designers say they
were inspired by the Zen Buddhist principles of
harmony, respect, pur>ty and tranquillity — they are Geoff Gardiner and Ian Nisbett from the English Midlands, where the Zen was built. Geoff says: “We re

common sense than the entry model., . The revamp of the Forester is a ^ombina-
tion of typical midlife cosmetics (like highe , wider rear lamps), interior improvements (more space in the rear seats) and mecham cal adaptions (like a suspension tweak to make the handling sharper). Subaru hopes the changes will be good enough tc.ware1 of f the threat from the improved Toyota RAV4 and the Honda CR-V. It believes Forester can pinch sales from “lifestyle” estates such
as the Audi A4 Avant. Subaru has made much of the low centre
of gravity which is one reason why the Forester is enjoyable to drive. So too are other SUVs (certainly the RAV4) because
people nowadays demand refinement. Features on the Forester 2.0 include self-
levelling rear suspension ( i t adjusts accord ing to the weight of the load), anti-lock brakes, tw in airbags, remote central lock ing, power steering, unheated electric m ir rors, radio/CD player and roof rails.

to the RAF Foundation. I t has combined with the buzy Lamplugh Trust to warn motorists
of the dangers which exist, especially as hours of darkness lengthen each
week.Edmund King, executive director of the RAC Foundation, says: “Thankfully, attacks on drivers are uncommon and one of the attrac tions that cars have over public transport is the personal protection they offer. But car thieves arc becoming more opportunistic and some have taken to targeting the car through the driver, rather than just
their valuables.” The RAC urges motorists to iook
after their cars to reduce the chances of breakdowns and to be sure they do not run out of fuel. Doors should be locked and windows and sun root closed in stop/go traffic. And motorists are advised to keep bags, mobile phones and other valuables
