Clitheroe’s warm and intimate atmosphere

T

HE warm, intimate and self-contained atmosphere of

Clithcroe is especially val

ued at Christmas. As a shopping town it has

two remarkable features which stand out whatever a

visitor’s needs. Numerous top-quality

specialist retailers nudge each other in Clilheroe’s shopping streets. Several continually attract national and even international cov erage in their own specialist media and as tourist attrac

tions as well. But there’s plenty of

bread-and-butter shopping opportunity as well. Few towns of Clitheroc’s size have four supermarkets, each with its own particular appeal, situated within a few hundred yards of each other! Naturally, all the stores

and shops have their own plans for Christmas. Tuesday, December 11th.

Whalley and at Marsden Building Society in Clithcroc. The money raised from

the Pickwick celebrations is spent locally in three main areas - local charities, indi viduals and families in the Whalley area with special needs, and local organisa tions such as uniformed groups and churches. Recent donations have

been made to Blackburn Queen's Park Hospital Nco- Natal Intensive Care Unit, tbe Clitheroe Heart Machine Fund and the Whalley Guide and Scout Group Minibus Fund, as well as various local individuals suffering hardship, especial ly as a result of debilitating illnesses such as leukaemia. Once again, the village

will be ablaze with colour, thronging with sound and packed with people. Sponsored by Railtrack,

between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. the streets will be taken over by hot chestnut roasters, carol singers, speciality stalls and festive activities. There will be extra trans

port to and from the village and, as ever, Pickwick Night promises to be a fun-filled event for absolutely every member of the family. Children’s favourite Bob

the Builder and his handy helper Wendy will mark the stall of Christmas shopping in Burnley, when they switch on this year's festive lights on November 22nd. “A lull night of entertain

ment. hosted by 2BR, and late night opening until 9 p.m. awaits the first festive shoppers. Before the big switch on there will be music, dancing,

games and giveaways as well as a visit from Father Christmas. And the evening will end with a firework extravaganza. The annual event marks

the beginning of late night shopping on Thursdays until 9 p.m. and on Sundays between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Throughout December

there will be an extensive programme of festive enter tainment on selected Thurs days, Saturdays and Sun days, with face-painting, carols from various choirs, dancing from the Brunshaw Twirlers, festive tunes from a Caribbean steel band and not forgetting Santa’s Grotto. Burnley Town Centre has

shops to find every kind of Christmas present and enough parking to cater foi the crowds, with more than 450 time limited on-street parking spaces and a total of 4,000 off-street parking spaces, including 240 in the Charter Walk Shopping Centre car park and 505 in the Millennium Car Park. Shoppers will be able to

take advantage of the extra hours right up until 5-30 p.m. on Christmas Eve, although some shops will be closing an hour or so earlier. Stores will be closed Christ mas Day and Boxing Day and the sales will start on December 27th. It will be normal trading on New Year's Eve, although like Christmas Eve some shops may close an hour early. The "closed" signs will be on all the doors on New Year's Day and everything will return to normal on January

2nd. In Padiham shopkeepers

will be decorating their win dows in time for the festive shoppers looking for all those Christmas presents, from the major stores to

smaller shops selling a wide range of goods. Padiham also has its own market where there are always plen ty of good buys for bargain

hunters. The festive season is
