and participation for the event. A charity auction will be held
a t 7 p.m., for which Mr Barber is collecting items . He has asked soccer clubs across the North-West to donate signed match footballs and seeks arti cles from clothing shops. He said th a t people in Win
dermere held a similar auction and received food items from shops, meals vouchers from re s ta u ra n ts and weekend breaks frotn a travel agency. The Addington Fund, th e
Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institute and the Craven Trust will also have stands a t the fair. These will b e n e f i t from th e p ro f its made on th e auction sale. Other non-profit-making organisations will also be repre
sented. There will be entertainments,
competitions and games. One competition will be a human version of one man and his dog, teams of five people replacing shepherd, dog and sheep. One person armed with a whistle must pen the other four, who are blindfolded "sheep" and
must follow the whistled instr ructions. Any group of five can take
part and entries can be placed with Mr Barber. There will also be a tractor driving contest. All activities except the tractor dri ving will be held indoors. Although livestock cannot be
shown and sold owing to FMD restrictions, the fair is intended to give everyone in local rural communities a day out to enjoy the business and social activi ties such a fair provides. Mr Barber said th a t the fair
will go some way to helping those who have been isolated by FMD res trictio n s renew old acq u ain tan ces and s ta r t th e process of returning to the nor mality enjoyed by the Valley communities before the coun tryside was closed down in Feb
ruary. He said: "The social side of
farming and rural businesses are an integral part of life here: it's not just work. This fair will mark a return to that, as there will be plenty of opportunity to meet old friends."
Clitheroe Old Fair developed
fairs to be held annually a t the command of Henry IV in 1409. Five fairs developed from these, with horse fairs in October and December, plus a sheep fair held "at the back of the year". Originally they were held in the M a rk e t Place and a d ja c e n t s t re e ts , th en a t th e au c tio n mart, which had the effect of reducing th e townspeople's
attendance. In March, 1963, a newspaper
article said th a t "the approach ing fair would no doubt pass by unnoticed except by the farm ing community". However, it is hoped th a t this
fair will a ttra c t everyone from towns, villages and countryside, not just to enjoy the event but to start a revival of the Valley's
rural life. Mr B a rb e r needs help to
organise the event. Any volun teers wishing to assist, provide auction prizes or offer services can c o n ta c t him on 01200 427771.
