HRISTMAS in the home usual ly means festive decorating. Somehow it is dillicull to cele

brate this special time without the embellishments that now normally go

with it. How you go about the decorating, and

what it costs, depends very much on how you and your family sec the exercise. If you go the whole hog, decorate the

place up to the nines and then burn the lot ritually on Twelfth Night, it will cost a

veritable fortune every year. Much better, therefore, to take the

baubles down carefully and bring them out, year after year, adding to your col lection as time. Finances and inclination

allow. There is a1 wealth of decorating mate

rials costing from pence to pounds in the shops just now.

Decorations range from tiny springs of r

plastic holly for the Christmas cake to enormous fake Christmas trees that look so real you could be forgiven for trying

to plant them out for next year! In fact, the simplest things probably

make for the most spectacular displays.

Natural greenery, decorated bare boughs, flowers and pot plants, fruit and nuts, suitably presented, take a lot ol beating. Add these to a little ingenuity, a spot ol invention, a vivid imagination, and you will have a home dressed to kill, and it will hardly cost more than a pound or

DECORATING the Christmas tree is one of the

displays on a saucer with the candle and other deco

rations set in an oasis. Decorations can include

sprigs of holly or pine, artificial or dried lloweis

and the odd ribbon. Assembled round the

base of the candle so both oasis and saucer are con cealed. they look profes sional and expensive, as

well as attractive. In all your displays, do

not overlook the uselul- ness of pine cones, grass es, bare branches and even

drift wood. Do be careful about

lighting candles though. Never light them if they are part of an inflammable set-piece decoration oi dis

play. Choose your Christmas

tree with care. Natural trees are lovely,

of course, but unless you

ART of dressing the house includes dressing the festive

table. Be wise, unless il is just you and your partnei, go for paper tablecloth and napkins. While looks lovely, but there is a whole spectrum of colours to choose from, either plain or printed with Iestive

motifs. Make a colourful centrepiece cither with candles, fruit or a combi nation of both and youi table will set the scene for the very best Christmas I dinner ever. What is more, there will be no linen to launder when it is all over, and one less job to do l should be good news!
