and side airbags, power steering and windows, cen­ tral locking and an alarm. Not bad for the cash. But it is what is under


the bonnet that matters - the 1.8-litre, 20 valve tur­ bocharged engine also used in the fastest VW Golf GTi. Always an impressive unit, this power plant is as


flexible as you could wish, developing all its urge from as little as 1,800 r.p.m. You will need to watch the fuel gauge if you do this, of course, but with a little restraint, a day-to-day average of 35 m.p.g. ought to be perfectly possible. Do not expect anything too subtle when it comes to


the roadgoing experience. You should get the idea as soon as you twist the igni­ tion, thanks to a satisfying- ly exhaust note. Less satis­ fying - if you are not in the mood - is what promises to be an uncompromising ride, likely to acquaint your pos­ terior with every bump and ripple in the road. Mind
