Ilis audience was challenged by the facts of falling church attendances and the cultural implications of present day society, together with the need for the church to change to meet
those needs. Everyone enjoyed their packed meals at lunchtime and a hot salad and sweets at
high tea. During the day, everyone could browse
round an exhibition on the story of the beginning of Christianity and the history of Martin Top Chapel, illustrated with old photographs, documents and books. The display was arranged by Mrs Kathleen
thanked by Mr Selwyn Telford for being hosts for the day. The following day, the Sunday school

Sun day school scholars sang "Give ine oil in my lamp". During the service passages from the scripture were read by Sunday school teachers Mrs Sandra Lund and Mrs Sylvia Ranee. Love Dad,
the Post Office has made its first loss for over 20 years brought a swift and curt response from the Valley's MP and from the borough council, whose concern was made clear to the Govern ment in November last
year. Describing the £264m.
deficit as "another hammer blow" for post offices, Mr Nigel Evans said that this came on top of Government plans to scrap all benefit payments from them. Unless immediate action
is taken to ensure that busi ness is not lost, the prof itability of many post offices in the Ribble Valley will be under threat and they could face closure, said
Mr Evans. He added: "Without the
post office, many pension ers will become hostages in their home and those with out access to transport will feel neglected. This would be unacceptable and would be the death knell for many rural communities."
Erection of stables is blocked
COUNCILLORS have blocked an application for the erection of stables a t Stump Cross Cot tages, Hellifield Road, Bolton-by- Bowland. Ribble Valley Borough

for approval by council offi

the committee, officers said the proposed buildings - for three horses - would be rela tively small and unobtru

clear that a Government commitment not to scrap benefit payments from post offices would ensure their future. "Wo must look to other solutions such as the installation of bank machines in our post offices. This would ensure that the post office would remain a centre of activity and con tinue as a pillar of our rural community." Chatburn village post

the Government had given an assurance that those benefit recipients who wished to collect their ben efits in cash at a post office would continue to be able to do so and there would be no compulsion to use a bank account for those who did not wish to. Instead, a simple elec
