Bodypump becomes Britains fastest growing class

A fitness class called bo d y pum p , developed in New Zealand eight years ago, has become so popular that it is now offered at thousands of health clubs throughout the world and is the fastest growing fitness


class in the UK. Men and women trying BODYPUMP have found it so effective at


changing their body shape that there has been a huge demand ■ for the classes, with Hicks one of the 400+ British health clubs now licensed to offer the programme.


BODYPUMP is the first fitness programme to combine high repetition weight training with aerobic conditioning, and as a result, class

participants get the benefits of both in one workout solely in the gym and never venture into the studio to benefit from the motivating class atmosphere. Many women have never worked with weights and experienced the dramatic effects strength training can have on their body shape. BODYPUMP has enabled these two groups to come together, providing a highly effective workout, with weights in the studio.


BODYPUMP is a 45-60 minute non-impact workout to to high- energy music, which uses barbells and adjustable weights. Each class begins with a general warm-up, and participants are then led through a pre­ choreographed series


■ of weight bearing exercises, targeting all the major muscle groups in the body.


Fully qualified BODYPUMP instructors offer guidance on the


correct lifting techniques throughout the class, with people of all levels of fitness exercising together,


setting their own workout depending on


the weight they add to the barbell. You do not need to be co­ ordinated, as all the moves are very simple.


BODYPUMP classes are incredibly motivating, with an instructor shouting encouragement and rhythmic music pumping throughout the session. The classes are always easy to follow too, with no


complicated choreographed moves.


The most motivating aspect of all, however, is the dramatic change in body shape that results. Lifting weights means that muscles exert more force than they are used to, which in turn makes them stronger, leaner and firmer. Ceri at Hicks comments: “High repetition with low weights means you tone up your muscles without them becoming bulky, at the same as burning calories and fat. Linda Wilson joined us at Hicks in October 1999 and


presented us with this poem a week later. She has settled in nicely at the Club and is now enjoying a healthy lifestyle incorporating regular exercise into her weekly routine.


• Adding Unwanted Fat: Most adults report that they do not eat any more, or even as much, as they did when they were younger. So why does the average British adult add pne pound of body weight every year throughout the middle age?


Most people assume the addition of body fat is the result of less exercise. That however is only part ot the problem. As we age, our resting metabolism, (the calories our bodies burn at rest) decreases therefore we burn fewer calories per day to stay alive. The excess calories are placed into our fat storage areas resulting in inch and weight gain.
