WHEN Ibsen's "Ghosts" was first written it was considered an assault on social order and respectability and called "putrid" and likened to "an open

sewer".Attitudes may have changed in the century since then, but it is still a power ful play that challenges the audience and makes them think about the hypocrisies and hidden pains that blight lives. Per haps we can now cure the shameful dis- ease that is destroying Oswald, the son of Mrs Alving, the central character, but

BRINGING IBSEN’S GHOSTS TO LIFE

can we cure Aids which has become the "terrible secret" of our age? The Royal Exchange, probably the

flagship theatre of the North, has a long tradition of excellent productions of

Ibsen, translated by Michael Meyer into

clear and accessible English. "Ghosts" is worth seeing. Frances Tomelty gives a heart-wrenching perfor

mance as Mrs Alving, supported by Paul Hilton as Oswald. David Ilorovitch as Parson Manders is both dedicated and corrupt and the performances of Katy Cavanagh as the young Regina and Robert Blythe as wily old Engstrand add much to the drama. Robert Blythe is particularly good as the sly carpenter who manipulates everyone and ends up with what he wants and in the process generates considerable humour. I had not expected to laugh as much at an Ibsen

play.
