Space Star offers a little extra
By JONATHAN CROUCH___________ MITSUBISHI’S Colt Space Star
has gained a small but loyal fol
lowing among people who want all the advantages of a five-door family hatchback - with a little extra. Two engines are on offer, the first
being the familiar 84 b.h.p. 1.3-litre unit already used in the smaller Colt. It is relatively frugal, but unremark able against the clock. Much better, if funds permit, to go for one of the two 1.8-litre GDI models, priced from £12,995 and powered by the 121 b.h.p. motor also used by the larger Carisma
five-door. These larger-engined models come
with the option of Tiptronic-style
automatic transmission, the package featured here. Two automatic 1.8-litre Space Star models are on offer - the Equippe at £13,995 and the Elegance
at £14,995. Recent specification improvements
include the addition of manual air con ditioning as standard, twin front airbags, colour-keyed door mirrors, a tachometer and ABS with EBD (Elec tronic Brakeforce Distribution) for even shorter stopping distances. The 1.8 GDI Elegance also comes
with a satellite navigation pre-kit. In summary, an interesting alterna
tive to the usual choices available for the family seeking a compact run around. Sensible — but not too sensible

succeeded. In production form, the MR2 tops the
Extreme M coupe has legend*ary looks T
By ANDY ENRIGHT______________________________
HERE are few cars on sale today which polarise opinion more than BMW's M coupe. Love or hate its
looks, the most extreme M car cannot be ignored and looks set to become a mod
ern classic. The M coupe is a strict two-seater, but
with more luggage capacity than the sim ilarly priced M roadster upon which it is based. Despite this, it is a tight squeeze
once inside. Twist the key and you get the full-strength 321 b.h.p. in-line six-cylin der engine that we have come to know and love from the M3 and M roadster. Rest to 60 m.p.h. in 4.9 seconds on its w a y to its 160 m.p.h. top speed guaran tees the M coupe's performance creden-
tials. The M coupe will appeal to a distinct set
of buyers. Despite outselling its M road ster sibling two-to-one, this is a car which is often bought enthusiasts who would

scales at just 975kg. Which means that the little 140 b.h.p. engine can push the car to GO in just 7.9 sec onds on the way to 130 m.p.h. - faster than virtu ally all its equivalent mainstream rivals. When
you consider that the Toy ota is lighter by the weight of a passenger than the MX-5 and a whole 260kg lighter than a Z3, this is hardly surprising.
Inside, the interior is nothing fancy - and there
is very little luggage space. Nothing, in other words, to distract you from the job in hand. Real enthusiasts will love this, just as they will love everything about the latest MR2, a car which properly recaptures
the carefree uncomplicated spirit of the ’80s original.; Less a roadster to be seen • in, it is more the kind you buy for those occasions when it is just you and the open road. Less in this case is more. Much more.
I ook at a TVR or a Nissan Sky- . considering a BMW. You will cept its shortcomings, adore its f and let its looks grow on you. out its history, BMW has a casionally producing vehicles MW in conception. Cars such as \1 and Z1 spring to mind, and it st that the M coupe can now be ith the addition of the M coupe le Ultimate Driving Machine has veil, more ultimate.
