j \ . _ ' 'I \ / Cute and d

By JONATHAN CROUCH

ALTHOUGH maybe not as cute in appear ance as its predecessor, Vauxhall’s latest Corsa supermini has grown up in all the areas that were becoming irritat ing in the old model. And it adds a few new

virtues of its own. This time the chassis and

suspension are completely new, although the engines

bolted on to them are not, borrowed as they are either from the previous model or from the larger Astra. Not that this should put

you off. Latterly at least, engines were never really a Corsa problem, not in lower order models anyway. The three cylinder 1.0-litre 12- valve unit is a jewel: so is the 1.2-litre 74 b.h.p. unit that 50% of customers choose. There was not much

wrong with the 89 b.h.p. 1.4-litre 16v motor bor rowed from the Astra either. Larger-engined petrol or diesel-powered Corsas have never been impressive, how ever, hence the introduction of a 123 b.h.p. 1.8-litre petrol unit for the new flag ship SRi. And two new 1.7- litre 10-valve turbo diesels

on a regular basis would go a long way to preventing many breakdowns in other words. Easy to say; harder to find the time to do. Recog nising that fact, the AA for example, has instructed its patrols where appropriate to carry out a series of brief checks at every breakdown. But the frustrating thing

for many drivers stranded by the roadside is that the breakdown should not have happened - the motoring associations reckon that around half of their call-outs could be avoided by regular

servicing. In addition, a specific pre

winter service check should ensure that vehicles are in good mechanical and electri cal condition to face whatev er winter might bring. Ideal ly, basic checks should include everything from lights and tyres to battery and starter motor. Tyres should always be

carefully checked, as worn treads are illegal as well as potentially lethal - for you and innocent bystanders, as well as other road users. Tyre pressure, too, should be regularly monitored. In Britain we do not go in for the Continental practice

of swapping tyres in the autumn to winter ones - then back in the spring to summer ones. To be fair, our climate does not justify it. It is important, therefore, to ensure that you choose an appropriate tyre to see you safely on your way all year round.

- i rw ie e w ■ip I V& mmmk: ..................b 1 *■' ..... “E. * < * , . A . ~ ; .... Battery failure is one of

the most common causes of breakdown, drained from leaving the lights on as we all do from lime to time or sim ply dead, kaput, wiped-out. Many recovery patrols now carry new batteries for sale, so that they can solve the problem on the spot. A lot of people think that

car batteries should last for ever and the confusion is compounded by batteries claiming to offer "lifetime guarantees" - the lifetime of what? You? The car? It is actually the lifetime of the battery and on average that is three years. Sluggish starting is a sure

sign that your car battery is getting old. As soon as start ing becomes slow, it is time to think about buying a new battery. It is possible that the

problem might lie with the starter motor, so ask your garage to check that out, along with the fan belt. Radiators might be sport

ing leaks or cracks - take a look. It is worth testing the strength of the anti-freeze. Extra glycol-based anti freeze will boost levels to manufacturers’ recommend

ed levels. The washer systems also

need to be tested and, of course, before long journeys, water and cleaner should be topped up to ensure opti mum visibility whatever the weather. Hoses, too, should be examined for any cracks or leaks and replaced if there is any doubt that they will

The importance of being modern

By JONATHAN CROUCH________

A

ltho ug h Oscar Wilde warned about the dangers of being

modem (“one is apt to become old fashioned very quickly"), it is not an approach that has done Skoda much harm.

Octavia and the Fabia super mini have embraced the VW Group’s approach to hi-tech modem motoring and con verted sceptical buyers as a result. Now, a slightly more aggressive image is needed - hence the thinking behind Ihe second generation Octavia range featured here.

Both the family-sized O c ta v ia range featured here. Along with more dynamic

looks, the latest hatchback and estate range has a high performance RS derivative.

Plus there is a clever, go- almost-anywhere 4x4 estate

version due in a showroom near you soon.

For the time being, how

ever, the recipe is much the same as before - although with a series of useful tweaks.

With the exception of the 1.8-litre 180 b.h.p. tur bocharged petrol engine used in the RS, the engine line-up is largely unchanged, although the staple 100 b.h.p. 1.6 and 115 b.h.p. 2.0 litre power plants are now “green" enough to comply

"green enougn iu

with tough European stan dards, as is the 150 b.h.p. petrol turbo 1.8. The 68

b.h.p. SDI and 90 b.h.p. TDI diesels are unchanged, as is the 110 b.h.p. TDI range-topper. Visual changes (inside and

out) are equally Slight, though make a suprising amount of difference. To

have been improved without change to to a pricing struc ture, which stays in £11,500 to £17,500 territory. Mind you, the trim desig nations sound more trendy,

ranging from Classic through Ambiente to Ele gance. All but entry-level models get ABS and Skoda has taken the opportunity to introduce a selection of other electronic aids from the VW

parts bin. These include EBS (electronic brake force distribution), ASR (an anti- whcelspin regulator) and ESP (an electronic stability programme). In summary then, a useful

package of changes which has indeed added an extra edge to the Octavia’s appeal. The dangers of being thor oughly modem appear to have passed Skoda by.

Further reductions on Rover 25 and 45 models R OVER has announced fur ther reductions on five

specific 25 and 45 models. They cover three specific

25 models: the 3-door 1.6 iL, the five-door 1.6 iS and the 5-door 2.0-litre turbo diesel iE. Two five-door 45 models are also included - the 1.4 iE and the 1.4 iS.

The story here is basically

that you can save a further amount of up to £ 1 ,3 8 5 , depending on the car you choose. There is now a real confi

dence about Rover's 25 supermini and 45 family hatchback, highlighted by a new three-year w a r ran ty

and longer 15,000-mile ser vice intervals on most mod els. Both cars drive with a greater air of authority too, thanks to a whole series of BMW-engineered under skin changes intended to imbue a sportier feel. Rover reckons the entire 25 and 45 ranges should provide a

should be replaced after a year's use, so check them out as winter approaches for wear and tear. Exhausts work hard all

year, so it is worth including

this important piece of equipment on your checklist, not just as winter approach es but before a holiday. A quick check up could also save your car failing its MoT. According to the Department of Transport, last year more than 7% of petrol cars and light vans and nearly 11 % of their diesel counterparts failed their MoT because of high exhaust emissions. Exhausts are most likely

to split at either the silencer or back box, but usually give little warning of a pending

failure. If you have recently

bought a car second hand it could also be worth changing the cam belt, according to the RAC, who have to deal with 36,000 breakdowns a year caused by broken tim ing belts. A broken belt, it warns, could wreck the engine, causing thpousands of pounds worth of damage, while the cost of fitting a new belt is relatively low. There are no warning

signs that the belt is about to break. That tends to hap pen as you try to start the engine and the car simply

will not run. One thing you almost cer

tainly will not be able to check and rectify yourself prior to venturing out on roads in any condition are the shock absorbers. Yet the danger of driving a car with worn shock absorbers is con siderable. Shock absorbers are hid

den beneath the car’s body work and behind the wheels - out of sight and therefore out of mind for many motorists. The performance of a shock absorber deterio rates gradually and imper ceptibly over time, during which the driver unwittingly adapts his or her driving style to compensate for the worsening condition and handling of the car.
