Two Thousand Candlcs; lnn on the Wharf, Burnley; September 23rd ,;' :t

PLAYWRIGHT Alan Bennett, the man responsible for writing the well-known monologues "Talking Heads", will launch the grand finale of the Canal 2000 festival. After declaring the event open he will

light the first candle of the evening. Individ uals representing schools and local groups

will then light up a five-mile stretch of the canal through Burnley centre by candle

light. The illumination of the canal will be the

central focus of activity, but there will also be a programme of canalside entertainment including jazz, folk and classical musicians, jugglers, fire-eaters and stilt-walkers. Saturday evening's entertainment is the

_ conclusion of C2K, a festival being coordi nated by Mid Pennine Arts to celebrate a 25-mile stretch of Leeds and Liverpool Canal between Barnoldswick and Black burn. The long-term aim of the project is to help restore the canal to a full and vibrant life for local people and visitors.

ONE of the most hilarious and extraordinary shows, "Sing-A-Long-Sound of Music", is set to arrive at the Victoria Theatre in Halifax

for one night only. This is a fantasic opportunity to watch

the original 1965 film in glorious techni- colour, now with subtitled musical numbers

so that the whole audience can sing along! If you have always wondered about the

delights of wearing chintz curtains, being able to dress up as your favourite character will certainly add to the excitement. Full of audience participation, this show can be seen on Saturday, October 14th, and

is sure to be a memorable night out. Beware - the aisles are alive. . .

ITS time to get shipshape for this Gilbert and Sullivan classic as passengers are now being invited aboard to see the hit musical

production of HMS Pinafore. After a sell-out success in London earlier

this year, members of the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company will be dropping anchor in Manchester for a series of shows. Some of Gilbert's wittiest characters

appear in this satire on rank and station in English life including the Rt. Hon. Sir Joseph Porter - the man who has become First Lord of the Admiralty without having seen a ship - Little Buttercup and Dick

Deadeye. Sullivan's toe-tapping score includes

songs such as "When I was a Lad", "I am the Captain of the Pinafore" and "The Pud ding Basin Song", among others. ® For more details contact the box office
